What Is The Bone Temple About?

Directed by Nia DaCosta and written by franchise architect Alex Garland, The Bone Temple serves as the middle chapter of the new trilogy. The story follows Dr. Ian Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) and his radical experiments within a fortified bunker known as the “Bone Temple.” As society outside continues to crumble under the Rage Virus, Kelson believes he has found a way to “evolve” the infection, using a captured Alpha infected named Samson as his primary subject.

The film also introduces a terrifying new survivor faction known as the “Jimmys,” led by the sadistic Jack O’Connell, who worship the virus as a form of divine intervention.

This is a significant tonal shift from its predecessor — trading open-world survival for something far more intimate and psychological. Think science gone wrong meets cult horror. The 28 Days Later franchise universe has always balanced visceral thrills with social commentary, and The Bone Temple leans hard into both.

Why the March 31 Date Is a Big Deal

Having premiered in theaters on January 16, 2026, The Bone Temple is making its Netflix debut just 74 days later — mirroring the aggressive streaming strategy seen with its predecessor, and moving faster than the typical 90–120 day window for Sony films arriving on the platform via their Pay-1 deal.

Despite struggling at the box office, the franchise still has a dedicated fanbase on both the critic and audience side — earning both a Certified Fresh and Verified Hot rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One Wall Street Journal critic called it one of the finest zombie films in years and a major improvement from the first entry.

Cillian Murphy reprises his iconic role as Jim in what promises to be a pivotal sequence — and that alone is worth the watch.
