AIFF elections are set to happen before September 15

Last Wednesday (August 3), the Supreme Court ordered to quickly hold the elections for the executive committee of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) according to the schedule proposed by the Committee of Administration (CoA).

The Supreme Court and CoA are busy saving the AIFF from facing any FIFA suspension. So, their prime target is to hold the elections of the executive committee of the Indian football governing body on time.

To set up the new committee, the AIFF elections will be organized before September 15, 2022. While FIFA has set that deadline for the AIFF elections, the Indian football governing body will escape from facing any FIFA ban by holding the elections timely. The exact date of the elections is yet to be confirmed.

So, the new AIFF committee is likely to be set up before the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup 2022 and the ISL 2022/23.

Interim body

Now, the interim body will be created for the elections. The Supreme Court has ordered the creation of this interim body, which will hold the office for three months. The interim body will leave office after ensuring the adoption of the new constitution.

The interim body members can’t participate in the newly elected committee.

The Supreme Court also ordered the creation of an Electoral College for the Indian football governing body’s executive committee with representatives from 36 state associations and 36 representatives of former Indian football players.

The 36 representatives of former Indian football players will consist of 24 male and 12 female Indian footballers, who played at least one match for the national team and retired two years before the date of notification of the elections.

However, the Supreme Court has also clarified that the male and female ratio in the 36 representatives of former Indian football players should follow towards equality with time progress. Currently, male dominance has been followed only due to a lack of female footballers’ availability.
