IPL 2022: MS Dhoni takes up captaincy of CSK after 8 disappointing games

MS Dhoni has taken back the captaincy of Chennai Super Kings from Ravindra Jadeja. The all-rounder decided to relinquish his role in charge of the team after struggling to perform, and Dhoni obliged by taking charge of the franchise for the greater good.

The decision to make Jadeja captain of the team was announced only 24 hours before CSK’s first game of the season. This was out of fear that sponsors would pull out due to the brand value of having Dhoni as captain. And now, his brief spell in charge has been cut short following an official statement from the team.

MS Dhoni returns to CSK captaincy

“Look, nothing happens in CSK without MSD’s approval. He is the first, second, third, and last word when it comes to cricketing matters. Doesn’t matter who captains the side. If CSK would have announced Dhoni’s decision to step down two months before IPL, it would have affected the potential team sponsors’ morale.

“Once the sponsors were all locked in, it’s safer to make an announcement,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by the news agency PTI.

CSK have stated that stepping down from captaining the club will allow Jadeja to focus more on his individual game. So far, he has taken five wickets and scored 112 runs. Dhoni was seen making key decisions in games despite Jadeja being named captain. This resulted in him looking uncomfortable at times.

Even if MS Dhoni’s return to captaincy can help the team win the rest of their games, it is unlikely that they will be making it to the playoffs this year.
