Vijay’s Last Bow: “Jana Nayagan” Turns Release Day Into a Festival

Some film releases are just openings. This one felt like a send-off. Thalapathy Vijay’s swan song as a lead actor arrived in theatres today, and Tamil Nadu didn’t just watch — it celebrated.

A Festival Before the First Frame

Hours before “Jana Nayagan” hit screens, fans across Chennai and beyond had already turned theatres into festival grounds — giant cutouts, milk abhishekams, drum performances, and fireworks outside cinema halls. In Bengaluru, a viral clip showed fans setting off firecrackers inside a packed auditorium as smoke filled the hall, cheering continuing through the haze. Even Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay reportedly attended a private early screening at Chennai’s Tagore Film Centre alongside Secretariat staff and senior officials, just hours before public shows began.

Celebrity support showed up in person too — actresses Trisha and Keerthy Suresh both joined fans at Chennai theatres for the first-day-first-show experience, drawing loud cheers on arrival.

What Early Reviewers Are Saying

Reactions on social media have been mixed. Several early reviewers praised the first half as an energetic, old-school mass entertainer, highlighting the film’s intro sequence, Anirudh Ravichander’s score, and a strong interval block as high points. Others were far less impressed, criticizing the pacing, VFX quality, and Bobby Deol’s antagonist track, with some calling the execution outdated and the emotional core underdeveloped. One widely shared take described it as a disappointing farewell overall, awarding it a low rating and pointing to shaky editing and an overstretched climax.

The film reportedly follows the same broad structure as its inspiration, Bhagavanth Kesari, for its first half before diverging into an original storyline in the second.
