Vijay Sethupathi’s Muthu Alias Kaattaan Is Now Streaming — But Should You Watch It? The Internet Has Spoken

A severed head found near a mountain. A man described as a legend, a monster, and a miracle by different people who knew him. That is the arresting premise of Muthu Engira Kaattaan — and it dropped on OTT this week with all the weight of a Vijay Sethupathi project behind it. But does it deliver? Here is what early viewers and netizens have to say.

Muthu Series Overview

What Is the Series About?

Muthu Engira Kaattaan follows the story of a mysterious man named Muthu, whose life is described through conflicting and fragmented narratives that portray him variously as a legend, a monster, or a miracle. The series explores his true story and why different people hold such sharply contrasting perspectives about him. Esquire India The story kicks off with the discovery of Muthu’s severed head near a mountain, triggering a police investigation into both his identity and the reason for his murder.

What Are Viewers Saying?

The early audience verdict is a mixed bag — respectful of the craft but frustrated by the pacing. One netizen rated it 3/5 and said Vijay Sethupathi’s performance was good but the screenplay was very boring, though the background score and performances across the board were commendable.

Another viewer appreciated the good concept and appropriate casting for a crime drama, specifically calling out Vijay Sethupathi, Muthukumar, and Vadivel Kodangi as standouts — but felt the slow narration was the main issue, with several portions feeling laggy and lacking the gripping twists the investigation genre demands. This viewer rated it just above average at 2.75/5.

A third netizen felt the material might have worked better as a film rather than a web series, pointing out the somewhat slow screenplay as the main weakness.

The consensus: great concept, good cast, but a runtime of five-plus hours that feels a little too generous for the story being told.

Muthu Supporting Cast
