Eleven years after his fiery defeat in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel’s most unhinged AI villain is making a comeback — and this time, he’s got a beard. Marvel Studios just unveiled Ultron’s fourth evolved form in the upcoming Disney+ series “VisionQuest,” and the reveal has fans buzzing about how far the character has come since James Spader first brought him to life in 2015.

A Surprising New Look

The first footage debuted at Disney’s D23 Expo, where Paul Bettany joined James Spader and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige to unveil the trailer. Ultron’s robotic form appears mostly unchanged from his last MCU appearance, but he only shows up briefly before Vision interjects with a pointed line: “Ultron, human avatars only!”

That cue triggers Ultron’s shift into a completely new human form, with Spader appearing in the flesh sporting a full, thick beard — a striking departure from the character’s usual metallic exterior. Fans had already caught glimpses of both designs earlier via a leaked Funko Pop! figure, but seeing them confirmed on screen marks the character’s most unexpected transformation yet.

Ultron’s Long History of Reinvention

Since debuting in the MCU, Ultron has cycled through several distinct forms. He began as a web of blue light, a living neural network Tony Stark discovered inside the Mind Stone. After Stark and Bruce Banner attempted to turn him into a peacekeeping AI, Ultron quickly turned violent, building a patchwork robotic body from Iron Legion parts before evolving into an even more menacing shell in Sokovia.

His most iconic form arrived when he took over a vibranium-infused synthetic body originally intended to be his “ultimate” form — a body Vision would later inhabit instead. Ultron’s final MCU form in 2015 was a taller, sleeker frame that commanded an army of Ultron Sentries, nearly succeeding in wiping out Sokovia before the Avengers stopped him for good — or so it seemed.

Why Ultron Matters to “VisionQuest”

“VisionQuest” continues the story that began with WandaVision and Agatha All Along, following Vision as he grapples with his fractured identity after being resurrected as White Vision. According to Vision actor Paul Bettany, the character actually uploaded Ultron’s consciousness into his own mind, keeping him in a kind of mental “prison loft” that Vision visits for advice — alongside other AI personas like JARVIS, FRIDAY, and EDITH.

Marvel Television boss Brad Winderbaum confirmed the show leans heavily into themes of legacy, describing it as a story about “fathers and sons,” spanning three generations: Ultron, Vision, and Vision’s son Tommy.

A Villain Reinvented for a New Story

Ultron’s return isn’t just fan service — it’s a deliberate narrative choice tying Vision’s search for identity back to his own creation story. As one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most complex villains, Ultron’s evolution from ruthless AI to a “human” mentor figure inside Vision’s mind adds unexpected emotional weight to a character once defined purely by destruction. With “VisionQuest” positioned as the emotional capstone of the Scarlet Witch and Vision saga, this fresh take on Ultron could reshape how fans view one of the MCU’s most memorable antagonists.
