The Dilemma Regarding the IPL Title Sponsorship: What’s Next after TATA’s rumoured exit?

As the Indian Premier League IPL 2023 season approaches, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) faces another blow in the commercial market as Tata Group is reportedly considering not renewing their contract for the IPL title sponsorship after this season. Despite this, BCCI remains positive and hopeful that many other companies are eager to sponsor the popular league.

Here’s a closer look at the current situation and what’s next for the IPL title sponsorship.

Past IPL Title Sponsors:

  1. DLF: 2008-12
  2. Pepsi: 2013-15
  3. Vivo: 2016-19
  4. Dream11: 2020
  5. Vivo: 2021
  6. Tata: 2022-23

Tata’s decision not to bid for the IPL title sponsorship next season will not impact their Women’s Premier League (WPL) deal. Tata signed a five-year contract with BCCI for WPL sponsorship, which was announced just days before the inaugural auction. The deal includes the use of Tata Motors and Tata Financial Services products leveraged to promote the league. Tata Motors has been a constant in the IPL in recent seasons, with the Super Striker Award, where their cars (Tata Nexon, Tata Harrier, and Tata Punch) are up for grabs.

The value of the Tata deal for the WPL is still unknown, but BCCI considers it a huge success. The Indian cricket board sold five WPL teams for a combined 4670 crore, and a 951 crore deal with Viacom18. This mega broadcast deal makes WPL one of the biggest franchise T20 leagues in the world. The inaugural season of WPL will kick off on March 4, 2023, and will feature 22 games across two venues – DY Patil Stadium and the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. The final will be played on March 26, just five days before IPL 2023.

The BCCI invited bids for the IPL title rights on February 9, but there was little interest in picking up the sponsorship for an exorbitant amount. Tata came on board as the title sponsor, but they are not looking to renew their contract for the IPL after 2023. This is due to the market slowdown and an impending global recession, which affects Tata’s business. However, BCCI officials remain positive that many big companies are eager to sponsor the IPL.

Despite the recent news about Tata not renewing their contract for the IPL title sponsorship, BCCI remains optimistic about the future of the league. The WPL sponsorship deal with Tata is a significant success, and the league promises to be a game-changer for women’s cricket. The IPL has always been a highly sought-after platform for advertisers, and there will likely be many bidders for the title sponsorship when the time comes. The league has weathered many storms in the past, and it will likely do so again. We’ll have to wait and see what’s next for the IPL title sponsorship.
