Tamil Cinema Loses Its ‘Screenplay King’: K Bhagyaraj, the Legend Who Wrote Emotions Better Than Anyone, Dies at 73

Some people don’t just make films — they define an era. K Bhagyaraj was one of them. The veteran Tamil actor, director, and screenwriter passed away on June 27, 2026, after suffering a major cardiac arrest in Chennai. He was 73. The news has sent shockwaves across the Tamil film fraternity, leaving colleagues, fans, and an entire generation of cinephiles heartbroken.

What makes it even more poignant? He had reportedly been in great spirits just recently, having travelled to Goa to attend a friend’s daughter’s wedding. Life, as it does, gave no warning.

K Bhagyaraj: A Life in Cinema

The Man Behind the Magic

Born in Erode, Bhagyaraj began his journey in cinema as an apprentice, honing his skills as an assistant director under the legendary Bharathiraja — one of Tamil cinema’s most celebrated auteurs. That early training was the foundation of everything that followed.

He quickly carved out his own voice, becoming one of the most influential creative forces of the 1980s and 1990s. His genius lay in finding cinematic gold in everyday life — stories rooted in family values, rural settings, and deeply relatable human emotions. Fans and critics alike called him the “Screenplay King” of Tamil cinema, and he wore that title with quiet pride.

His iconic filmography includes timeless classics like Mundhanai Mudichu, Andha 7 Naatkal, and Darling, Darling, Darling — films that generations continue to revisit with warmth and nostalgia.

He is survived by his wife, veteran actress Poornima Bhagyaraj, and their two children, actor Shanthnu Bhagyaraj and daughter Saranya Bhagyaraj.
