Nintendo Switch 2 System Update 22.5.0: Best New Features

Nintendo Switch 2 System Update 22.5.0 went live on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. This update brings several refinements to the platform that originally launched on June 5, 2025. While we don’t have concrete sales figures or active user counts tied to this firmware release, it marks an important step for the console’s long-term stability and accessibility.

As reported by Nintendolife, this latest patch focuses on both the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware and the original Nintendo Switch ecosystem. It aims to provide a consistent experience across the brand’s current game library.

Overview of Update 22.5.0

This firmware release primarily enhances core system stability. For the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo has rolled out targeted accessibility features, expanding “Text to Speech” and “Change Speech ⇔ Text During GameChat” options to include Dutch and Russian languages. These additions highlight the developer’s commitment to inclusive gaming, allowing a wider audience to interact with their consoles more effectively.

On top of accessibility improvements, the update also brings a significant visual overhaul to the original Nintendo Switch eShop. The digital storefront now sports a refreshed layout, and its interface colors will change dynamically to match your selected theme if the “Basic Dark” setting is active.

You’ll also find a new PIN verification step when accessing the eShop or managing saved payment methods. This adds an important layer of security for families sharing a single device.

Key Features and Improvements

General performance enhancements

The firmware update includes background optimizations aimed at improving system responsiveness. By fine-tuning how the console manages background tasks, players should notice fewer hiccups when switching between the home screen and active applications. These adjustments are crucial for maintaining the seamless digital ecosystem Nintendo continues to develop for its hardware.

Bug fixes and stability improvements

System stability remains a key focus of this release. While Nintendo hasn’t provided a detailed list of every bug fix, the update addresses known issues that have popped up since the console’s release last year. These stability patches help ensure consistent performance during long gaming sessions.

New user interface tweaks

Video playback has also received a nice upgrade. When you’re watching full-screen content in the News feed or eShop, you can now skip forward or rewind by 10 seconds using the ZL and ZR buttons. This intuitive setup makes it easier to review game trailers or developer updates without fumbling with touch controls.

Game compatibility updates

While the patch notes don’t detail specific backward compatibility improvements for the Switch 2, system-wide updates typically enhance how the platform handles legacy software. Keeping the firmware up to date minimizes the risk of compatibility errors when revisiting older Nintendo Switch titles on the newer hardware.
