Reinildo to Sunderland: Premier League New Boys Secure Atlético Madrid Star in Two-Year Deal

The football world has been captivated by Sunderland’s remarkable journey back to the Premier League, and now the Black Cats have made their first major statement of intent. Reinildo Mandava has officially completed his move to Sunderland, signing a two-year contract as a free agent after his contract with Atlético Madrid expired on June 30, 2025.

This signing represents a significant coup for the newly-promoted side, who secured their return to England’s top flight through a dramatic Championship playoff final victory over Sheffield United at Wembley in May 2025.

From Wembley Glory to Premier League Ambitions

Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League came through an extraordinary 2-1 comeback victory over Sheffield United in the Championship playoff final, with Mayenda and Watson striking in the final moments at Wembley to secure a stunning turnaround victory. Now, following their official confirmation as part of the Premier League alongside Leeds United and Burnley, the Black Cats are wasting no time in strengthening their squad.

The acquisition of Reinildo demonstrates Sunderland’s serious intent to establish themselves in the Premier League rather than merely survive their first season back in the top flight.

Why Reinildo Chose the Stadium of Light

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Sunderland have finalized the signing of Reinildo, with the Mozambican full-back arriving on a two-year contract. The 31-year-old left-back brings a wealth of experience from his time at one of Europe’s elite clubs, having been a consistent performer in La Liga and European competitions.

Atlético Madrid confirmed the departure of Reinildo Mandava this morning, with Sunderland leading the race to sign him as a free agent, beating competition from other interested clubs to secure his signature.
