The Timeline: From Engagement to Heartbreak

The love story that captured millions of hearts took a devastating turn. Smriti and Palash, who met through mutual friends bonding over music and cricket, announced their relationship publicly in 2024 after keeping it private for five years. Their engagement at a cricket stadium went viral, with fans celebrating the union of sports and music.

Pre-wedding festivities began days before the scheduled November 23 ceremony, with Smriti’s cricket teammates attending the sangeet. However, on the wedding morning, her father Shrinivas Mandhana suffered a serious health crisis requiring immediate hospitalization. The wedding was postponed indefinitely, and Palash’s family returned to Mumbai, where he was also reportedly admitted due to stress-related concerns.

What Sparked the Controversy?

Following the postponement, social media erupted with unverified allegations, including claims of infidelity involving the wedding choreographer. Screenshots of alleged conversations circulated online, though their authenticity remained unconfirmed. A woman named Mary D’Costa denied any involvement after being wrongly identified in the rumors.

Palash’s family vehemently rejected these allegations as baseless, with his sister Palak Muchhal urging respect for their privacy. Fans noticed Smriti deleting pre-wedding posts and appearing without her engagement ring, fueling speculation that intensified until both parties addressed the situation directly.

Official Statements: Moving Forward

In her Instagram statement, Smriti emphasized her private nature while acknowledging the need to clarify matters. She stated the wedding is officially off and requested privacy for both families to process and heal. The star opener reaffirmed her commitment to representing India, declaring her focus remains on winning trophies for the nation.

Palash described this as the most difficult phase of his life, announcing his decision to step back from the relationship. He criticized those spreading unverified gossip and confirmed his team would pursue legal action against defamatory content. Both parties stressed the importance of respecting personal boundaries during challenging times.

Smriti’s Cricket Journey Continues

Despite personal turmoil, Smriti’s professional achievements remain stellar. She finished as India’s top run-scorer in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, accumulating 434 runs at an average of 54.25 across nine innings. Her 45-run contribution in the final, including a crucial 104-run opening partnership with Shafali Varma, helped India secure their first-ever World Cup title by defeating South Africa.

The victory marked a historic moment for Indian women’s cricket, with Smriti playing a pivotal role throughout the tournament. Her performance under personal pressure demonstrated remarkable mental strength and dedication to her craft.
