SanDisk Unveils World’s First 8TB SD Card: A Game-Changer in Storage Capacity

Forget about running out of storage for your camera or gaming devices any time soon. The name Western Digital probably got you thinking of storage solutions, and the company seems to switch it up this time in subtle changes with two new memory cards: a massive 8TB SD card as well as the world-first 4TB microSD. Taken together, these extensive capacities will make video production much more flexible whether or not you are taking shots on high-quality stills.

More About SanDisk’s 8TB SD Card

The world of memory cards has become hotly competitive in a battle for bigger storage, and these new models show Western Digital emerging as a leader in mobile-based storage. The new features bring on the cusp of April’s announcement for a 4TB SD card.

In a high-end mirrorless camera, the SanDisk 8TB SDUC UHS-I card would hold an approximate huge number of raw files: about 165k at 24MP—or enough for plenty in many industries. Likewise, the SanDisk 4TB microSDUC UHS-I card easily houses over 660 games that are each a hefty (in Nintendo Switch terms) 12GB in size—making it even larger than any high-capacity microSD cards you can buy today.

Unveiled at the Future of Memory and Storage Conference in California, these SanDisk cards create a new standard for digital storage. Each uses the Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) standard, which could technically allow for as much as 128TB of storage.

Western Digital, earlier this year made new boundaries with a 4TB SD card and a microSD card of 2 TB. These new releases double that capacity, although pricing and availability details remain unknown. Considering that a 1TB Extreme Pro card currently sells for $140 / £135 on Amazon, the 8TB version is expected to be significantly more expensive.

While these cards offer unprecedented storage, they come with a few caveats. Both are UHS-I, meaning slower transfer speeds compared to UHS-II-rated cards. Additionally, Western Digital has not disclosed the V classification, which determines minimum transfer speeds, for these cards. Despite potential concerns over speed and data security, the leap from the 32MB SD cards of 1999 to today’s 8TB card marks a significant milestone in storage technology.
