Samsung reigns top in the sales of SSD supply in the Q2 of 2021

The increased shortage of components and manufacturing materials have resulted in the halt of many manufacturing technologies. Recently the sales of the solid-state drives in the second quarter of 2021 remained almost flat. And this is due to a slight sequential decline in PC shipments in Q1.

However, in the quarter SSDs did outsell the hard drives by 47% since most of the clients now prefer solid-state storage. But, in the complete overall view, HDDs lead in terms of capacity by 411%. coming to competitors in the market, Samsung is on the top and still retains the world’s largest supplier position of SSDs and its followed close by Western Digital, and Kioxia.

99.6 Million SSDs Shipped in Q2

The total shipment industry reported a total of 99.6 million SSDs in Q2 2021, which is slightly up from 99.438 million drives in Q1. Overall, the top three storage makers, Samsung, Western Digital, and Kioxia has shipped 67.6 million hard drives with a capacity of 350.7EB, in Q2.

86.86 Million Client SSDs

In the second quarter of 2021, it also reported that client SSDs commanded the largest share of shipments with 86.86 million drives sold in the second quarter of 2021, which is up by 1.7% from Q1 2021. however, the sales of Pcs declined slightly in the second quarter of 2021 which is a total of  83.614 million units and went down slightly from 83.981 million PCs in Q1 2021.

12.74 Million Enterprise SSDs

Coming to the Enterprise-grade SSDs sold in the second quarter of 2021, its reported that they were lower quantities than client drives. And the report sales stated that around 12.74 million units were sold in Q2 2021.

During the second quarter, both SATA and PCIe enterprise drives were impressive and showcased rather impressive sequential shipments growth with 5.79 million by SATA and 5.84 million units sold by PCIe.

Sales of SAS SSDs are stagnated since they are new. The average capacity of a SAS SSD is 3.51TB, which is higher than that of PCIe/NVMe as well as SATA drives, hence they have an average selling price.

Coming to the top reigning champion of the SSDs sales, Samsung, makes some of the best SSDs available today, and leads the SSD market in terms of unit sales as well as in terms of exabytes shipments.

However, the South Korean tech giant still has problems with the highest average SSD capacity. The average capacity of a Samsung drive was 1.03TB in Q2 2021, which is lower than that of Seagate’s 1.69 and Intel’s 1.46TB average capacity.

So, if Samsung manages to increase its average SSD capacity’s and manage to keep the drives affordable it will become untouchable in the SSD drive market. For more information stay tuned.
