The relationship between Samsung and Apple was dubbed “Tech’s Unhappiest Marriage”, however, this wierd relationship will continue to exist. Because the Cupertino company will continue to depend on the Korean tech behemoth for the supply of premium panels, this unholy union is expected to last for some time.

According to a recent Reuters report, Samsung Display has committed a sizeable sum of money—just over 3 billion dollars—to the development of OLED technology. Following that, a 9to5Mac article connected this extra funding to the anticipated Apple’s “dramatically increased demand” for OLED panels.

Several sources claim that the Cupertino company will soon switch over to OLED technology for a number of its important products. This includes the premium iPad Pro lineup and MacBooks from Apple.

The majority of reports indicate that the upcoming iPad Pro 2024 lineup will only have OLED displays mostly from the Samsung Display.

As a result, Apple will essentially stop using two panel types: IPS LCD and mini-LED. Apple used IPS LCD panels exclusively for the vast majority of its products for the better part of a decade. OLED screens are superior in many essential ways, even though these types of displays have some advantages. Apple eventually gave in to the temptation of the better image quality, and the iPhone X introduced an OLED display.

In order to lessen Apple’s reliance on Samsung, the LCD panel had to be changed for a mini-LED one, according to the Information article mentioned above. It goes without saying that the initial plan was unsuccessful.

Apple adopted a similar strategy a few years later with the M1 12.9″ iPad Pro (2021). It now appears that the Cupertino company has given up on its plans to end its reliance on Samsung. Not anytime soon will Tech’s unhappiest marriage result in a divorce.
