Saif Ali Khan and Farhan Akhtar Set for Reported Thriller Reunion 25 Years After Dil Chahta Hai

A new Saif Ali Khan–Farhan Akhtar collaboration may be on the horizon. According to multiple reports, Saif is set to reunite with Farhan Akhtar and Excel Entertainment for an untitled thriller roughly 25 years after Dil Chahta Hai, the 2001 coming-of-age hit that marked Farhan’s directorial debut and gave Saif one of his most loved early-career roles as Sameer.

The new project is being described as a moral thriller or social thriller, with reports suggesting it will explore morality, ethics, and broader societal issues through an intense suspense-driven story. While the makers have not issued an official public announcement yet, the film is said to be in the development stage, with the screenplay still being worked on.

A Reunion Rooted in Bollywood Nostalgia

The excitement around the reported project comes largely from the legacy of Dil Chahta Hai. Released on August 10, 2001, the film starred Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Akshaye Khanna, and is still widely regarded as one of Hindi cinema’s defining urban friendship dramas. Hindustan Times noted that the film completes 25 years in August 2026, making the timing of this new reunion especially symbolic.

Saif himself recently spoke warmly about working with Farhan on Dil Chahta Hai, recalling the production as a fun, youthful experience and praising the professionalism of Farhan’s debut set. That context only adds to the curiosity around what kind of darker, more mature material the two might tackle together now.

What the New Thriller Is Reportedly About

Reports say the untitled film will move away from conventional commercial suspense formulas and instead focus on ethical dilemmas, morality, and socially relevant questions. Moneycontrol described it as a “morality-driven thriller,” while Filmfare said the story is expected to place its lead character in situations that challenge personal beliefs and difficult life choices. Mid-day similarly called it an “intense, edge-of-the-seat thriller” exploring morality and societal issues.

At the moment, Saif is reportedly attached to play the lead role, but other major details are still being finalized. Reports indicate that the makers are still looking for a leading actress, and a director has not yet been locked. Production is expected to begin by the end of 2026 if development stays on track.

Project Snapshot

The film is still untitled, but here’s a quick look at what has been reported so far.

Why This Collaboration Matters

Even though Farhan Akhtar may not be starring opposite Saif this time, his creative involvement through Excel Entertainment makes the reunion noteworthy. The two names remain strongly linked in audience memory because of Dil Chahta Hai, a film that helped redefine youthful friendship and romance for a generation of Hindi film viewers. A darker thriller now would represent a major tonal shift from the breezy Goa-set drama that first brought them together.

There is also natural interest in where the film may fit within Excel Entertainment’s wider slate. Moneycontrol reported that Excel has several major projects in motion, including Mirzapur: The Movie, while this Saif-led thriller is being positioned as one of the banner’s more intriguing upcoming titles.

Saif Ali Khan’s Current Career Phase

The reported thriller arrives at a busy time for Saif. Filmfare and Mid-day both highlighted that he has multiple projects in circulation, including other high-profile films, making this potential reunion with Farhan part of a broader career phase in which he appears to be balancing mainstream appeal with darker roles.

Reunion at a Glance

For now, this project remains a reported development rather than a formally announced film. But if it goes ahead, the reunion of Saif Ali Khan with Farhan Akhtar’s creative world 25 years after Dil Chahta Hai could become one of the more closely watched Hindi projects in development. And if the reports are accurate, audiences can expect something far moodier and more morally layered than the film that first connected them.
