1. Enthiran (2010) — Tamil | SunNXT

The one that started it all. Rajinikanth plays Dr. Vaseegaran, a scientist who builds a humanoid robot named Chitti — only for it to develop human emotions and turn rogue. Directed by S. Shankar with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as the female lead, this was a landmark film that proved South Indian cinema could match Hollywood sci-fi on scale and spectacle. Still holds up brilliantly.

2. Churuli (2021) — Malayalam | SonyLIV

Nothing prepares you for this one. Two undercover cops enter a remote jungle village to catch a fugitive — and once they cross the bridge into Churuli, reality itself starts unraveling. Directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery, this surreal, Groundhog Day-meets-fever-dream film traps both the characters and the viewer in a psychological loop. Deeply unsettling, deeply brilliant.

3. Kalki 2898 AD (2024) — Telugu | Prime Video

The most ambitious South Indian sci-fi film in recent memory. Set in a dystopian future, immortal warrior Ashwatthama must protect a pregnant woman carrying the prophesied saviour, Kalki — the tenth avatar of Vishnu — while bounty hunter Bhairava hunts them down. With Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, and Deepika Padukone, this mythological epic is visually unlike anything Indian cinema has produced. 4. Black (2022) — Tamil | Prime Video

Based on the Hollywood film Coherence, this is a lean, tense sci-fi thriller. Newlyweds on a vacation unknowingly enter a wormhole that keeps shifting timelines every time they pass through it. With Jiiva and Priya Bhavani Shankar, Black keeps you guessing till the very end — and it’s the kind of film you immediately want to rewatch.

5. Aditya 369 (1991) — Telugu | Prime Video

A true cult classic. A scientist’s time machine accidentally sends his daughter and her fiancé hurtling to the 16th-century Vijayanagara Empire — and then into a radioactive, post-apocalyptic future. Balakrishna’s swaggering presence and Amrish Puri as the villain make this a delightfully nostalgic watch. Decades old, but the ideas are timeless.

6. 7 Aum Arivu (2011) — Tamil | SunNXT

Suriya plays a circus performer who is descended from the legendary monk-warrior Bodhidharma. A genetics student awakens his dormant ancestral abilities to counter a Chinese spy using hypnosis and bioweapons. Directed by AR Murugadoss, the film blends genetics, martial arts, and patriotism into one thrilling package.

7. Gaganachari (2023) — Malayalam | Prime Video

Part mockumentary, part sci-fi comedy — 100% bizarre fun. Three eccentric bachelors holed up in an apocalyptic bunker suddenly find a mute female alien living with them. Arun Chandu’s film is unlike anything you’ve seen, and that’s precisely why you should watch it. Malayalam cinema really does play by its own rules.
