The Story That Will Keep You Up at Night
The Whisper Man is adapted from the New York Times bestselling novel of the same name by British author Alex North. The plot follows a widowed crime writer whose 8-year-old son is suddenly abducted. Desperate and out of options, he turns to the one person he’s been avoiding — his estranged father, a retired police detective.

As they race to find the boy, a terrifying pattern emerges: the abduction bears an unsettling resemblance to a decades-old cold case involving a convicted serial killer the town calls “The Whisper Man.” When children begin vanishing again and that chilling rhyme starts circulating once more, the retired detective who put the original killer away must face the nightmare all over again.
It’s a layered, deeply human story about fathers and sons — wrapped in a psychological thriller that the director himself compares in tone and ambition to The Silence of the Lambs, Prisoners, and Zodiac.
The Cast — A Dream Lineup
Robert De Niro plays the estranged retired detective — a role tailor-made for his commanding screen presence and ability to convey decades of emotional weight in a single glance.
Adam Scott plays the grieving, desperate father — and this role clearly hit close to home. A dad of two in real life, Scott described the emotional toll of the film as a “total physical and emotional nightmare,” capturing the complete powerlessness a parent feels when their child is in danger. In a genuinely charming behind-the-scenes detail, Scott admitted he had De Niro’s pictures taped to his middle school locker growing up — and even after months of filming together, he never quite got used to the surreal reality of working alongside his lifelong idol.
Michelle Monaghan rounds out the trio as Amanda Beck, adding another layer of intrigue to the mystery.
The film is the sixth major collaboration between Netflix and AGBO, the production powerhouse founded by the Russo Brothers — the same team behind The Gray Man and the Extraction franchise. Behind the Camera
Director James Ashcroft — known for the critically acclaimed The Rule of Jenny Pen — brings a methodically unsettling approach to the material, building what he describes as “layers of escalating tension and dread” rooted in recognisable, ordinary settings. The screenplay comes from Ben Jacoby (The First Omen) and Chase Palmer (It) — two writers with a proven track record in horror and thriller storytelling.
Academy award-nominated cinematographer John Schwartzman (Jurassic World) is behind the lens, promising a visually crafted, atmospheric experience.
Why This One Feels Different
Netflix drops thrillers regularly, but The Whisper Man has the ingredients of something genuinely special — a pedigree creative team, a legendary cast, source material with a built-in global fanbase, and a director whose previous work demonstrates serious tonal control. If it delivers even half of what the Russo Brothers’ AGBO banner has promised with past productions, August 28th is going to be a very long night on the couch.
