Real Madrid to Keep Thiago Pitarch as Fulham’s £30M Shea Charles Move Kills Transfer

Real Madrid are prepared to retain teenage midfielder Thiago Pitarch, with a transfer to Fulham no longer expected after the Premier League club shifted its recruitment priorities.

The Fulham Link — How It Started

It had all the makings of another Craven Cottage chapter written in Madrid ink. Fulham coach Álvaro Arbeloa expressed strong interest in signing Castilla product Thiago Pitarch for the London-based club, according to a report from MARCA.

The interest made obvious sense. On 17 February 2026, Arbeloa handed Pitarch his first official appearance for Real Madrid’s first team, making the player the owner of three exceptional debuts under the same coach inside a single year. Their bond was well established long before either arrived at their respective clubs this summer.

Pitarch would have been the third canterano going to Craven Cottage, after Fulham already signed both Gonzalo García and César Palacios this summer. Fulham had wrapped up deals for Gonzalo García and César Palacios, an agreement worth 50 million euros to Real Madrid in exchange for 70% of the rights to the two attacking players. The Cottagers, clearly emboldened by their growing Madrid pipeline, set their sights on Pitarch as the next piece of the puzzle.

Why the Deal Collapsed

However, the picture changed rapidly. Thiago Pitarch is no longer expected to join Fulham after the Premier League club completed the signing of Shea Charles. Fulham’s decision to sign Sheffield United midfielder Shea Charles changed the London club’s recruitment plans, as per Fabrizio Romano — the move for Charles means the Cottagers are no longer in the race to sign the Madrid youth product.

The change in Fulham’s plans has opened the door for Real Madrid to retain the young midfielder as part of their squad for the upcoming campaign.

Mourinho’s Madrid — The New Landscape

Central to understanding why Pitarch’s retention now makes strategic sense is the seismic managerial shift at the Santiago Bernabéu. Real Madrid named José Mourinho as their new manager on a three-year deal, which the La Liga club confirmed in a statement. Mourinho’s appointment became inevitable after Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez was re-elected, paving the way for the Portuguese’s return to the Spanish capital after 13 years.

Real Madrid signed Mourinho to a three-year deal as their new manager until June 30, 2029. The tactician, who once delivered a record-breaking La Liga triumph for Real, replaced Álvaro Arbeloa at the Santiago Bernabéu.

José Mourinho is already working at the Ciudad Real Madrid, with the new coach having met with his coaching staff to begin preparations for the 2026/27 season.

Pitarch in Mourinho’s Plans

Real Madrid are not planning to offload Thiago Pitarch this summer, with the 19-year-old midfielder remaining part of José Mourinho’s plans for the upcoming season.

Real Madrid are now prepared to keep Pitarch with José Mourinho’s squad, with the club viewing the youngster as a player who can continue his development within the team rather than leaving on a temporary basis.

Pitarch’s breakthrough during the second half of last season — 16 appearances across all competitions, including La Liga and UEFA Champions League fixtures — has convinced Madrid that he is ready for another step forward under Mourinho.

Pitarch was a hugely popular member of the squad for Arbeloa last season and actually played more minutes for the first team at Real Madrid than Dani Ceballos and Eduardo Camavinga. That is a remarkable benchmark for a player of his age, and one that reinforces why Los Blancos are in no hurry to push him out the door.

The academy graduate made his senior bow against Benfica in the UEFA Champions League under Arbeloa, a debut that announced him as one of the most exciting youth prospects to emerge from La Fábrica in recent years.

The Bigger Picture

Real Madrid’s decision to hold onto Pitarch reflects a broader philosophy under Mourinho — build around hungry, determined, talented youth whilst also relying on experienced heads. Pitarch offers something rare: elite academy pedigree, first-team exposure at the highest level, and an age profile that makes him an appreciating asset rather than a depreciating one.

With Charles’ arrival at Fulham, the situation has been effectively settled, leaving the Spanish giants ready to continue working with the talented midfielder. For Pitarch, staying in Madrid under one of football’s most decorated managers represents an opportunity too significant to pass up — and Real Madrid clearly share that view.
