Rani Mukerji’s ‘Mardaani 3’ Announced By Yash Raj Films: A Dark and Brutal Chapter Unfolds

Yash Raj Films (YRF) has officially announced the highly-anticipated third installment of the Mardaani series, with Rani Mukerji reprising her powerful role as Shivani Shivaji Roy. The announcement has set the stage for another gripping entry in Hindi cinema’s most celebrated female-led action franchise. Known for her unyielding resolve and fearless demeanor, Mukerji’s portrayal of the courageous police officer promises an intense, action-packed narrative.

The upcoming film, described as “dark, deadly and brutal,” will see fresh faces in the creative team, spearheaded by rising talents Aayush Gupta and Abhiraj Minawala.

Bollywood’s Iconic Cop Is Back with an Edge

Marking a new chapter in the Mardaani saga, YRF has enlisted Gupta, known for his work on Netflix’s internationally acclaimed The Railway Men, to craft the screenplay. Joining him is Minawala, who will direct the film, bringing his wealth of experience from YRF blockbusters such as Band Baaja Baraat, Sultan, and Tiger 3. Currently serving as associate director on War 2, Minawala’s creative insight is expected to elevate the franchise to new heights.

Production is slated to commence in April 2025, making this the first Mardaani film since 2019. The announcement reaffirms YRF head Aditya Chopra’s commitment to fostering emerging talent within the studio’s creative ecosystem.

Rani Mukerji’s Unwavering Dedication

Mukerji, whose career is synonymous with powerful performances, expressed her enthusiasm for the project:

“I’m thrilled to announce that we are starting shooting of Mardaani 3 in April 2025. I’m proud to essay the character of this feisty cop again in Mardaani 3 as a tribute to all the unsung, brave, self-sacrificing cops who work tirelessly every single day to keep us safe.”

The actress highlighted the responsibility of meeting audience expectations, emphasizing the franchise’s legacy of combining hard-hitting themes with compelling storytelling.

A Legacy of Success

The Mardaani series debuted in 2014 with its first film, captivating viewers with its gritty narrative and Mukerji’s fearless portrayal of a relentless cop taking on child trafficking. Its sequel, Mardaani 2 (2019), delved into the psyche of a criminal mastermind, solidifying the franchise as a benchmark for women-driven narratives in Indian cinema.

Riding on the critical and commercial success of both films, Mardaani 3 is set to push boundaries further. Mukerji affirmed:

“When we set out to make Mardaani 3, we were hoping that we find a script that would take the experience of watching a Mardaani franchise film higher. I am really excited about what we have at hand and I’m only hoping that the audience too feel the same after watching Mardaani 3 in theaters.”

A Global Cinematic Event

Scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release in 2026, Mardaani 3 is already generating significant buzz. The film aims to deliver a gripping storyline that resonates with audiences while staying true to the franchise’s core values of highlighting critical social issues.

Mukerji’s last appearance in Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway (2023) earned widespread acclaim, and her return as Shivani Roy is poised to reaffirm her position as one of Bollywood’s most versatile and impactful actors.

Anticipation Builds for a Bold New Chapter

With a talented creative team, a compelling narrative, and Mukerji at the forefront, Mardaani 3 promises an electrifying cinematic experience. As production gears up, fans eagerly await the return of Shivani Shivaji Roy, a character who embodies strength, resilience, and the fight for justice.

This next chapter in the Mardaani franchise is not just a movie—it’s a powerful statement about bravery, dedication, and the unyielding spirit of those who strive to make the world a safer place.
