The Premier League has confirmed a unique adjustment to its transfer window schedule for the summer of 2025. Due to the FIFA Club World Cup, an additional registration period will be introduced, allowing clubs to complete transactions earlier than usual.
This decision comes in response to FIFA’s ruling last October, which enabled teams competing in the tournament to make squad adjustments ahead of the competition in the United States.
Revised Transfer Window Dates
Premier League clubs reached a consensus to operate with two separate transfer windows in the summer of 2025. The updated schedule is as follows:
- First Window: Opens on Sunday, June 1 and closes on Tuesday, June 10
- Brief Closure: From June 11 to June 15
- Second Window: Reopens on Monday, June 16, and runs until Monday, September 1
An official Premier League statement confirmed: “The window will open early, between Sunday 1 June and Tuesday 10 June, due to an exceptional registration period relating to the FIFA Club World Cup. It will then reopen on Monday 16 June and close on Monday 1 September.”
Reason Behind the Change
FIFA’s approval of an “exceptional registration window” in October 2023 set the stage for this change. The decision primarily benefits English clubs participating in the tournament—Chelsea and Manchester City—as they will be able to finalize squad reinforcements and contract extensions before the Club World Cup kicks off on June 14 in Miami.
However, multiple Premier League clubs raised concerns about a potential competitive disadvantage. They feared being unable to make signings during this exclusive period for Club World Cup participants. As reported by The Guardian, these clubs advocated for an earlier opening to level the playing field, ultimately leading to the Premier League’s resolution.
Impact on Clubs and Transfers
With the revised transfer window, all Premier League clubs—not just those competing in the Club World Cup—will be permitted to sign and sell players during the early June period. This adjustment ensures fairness, preventing a scenario where certain clubs could strengthen their squads while others were restricted from doing so.
Additionally, discussions were held about whether the summer transfer window should close before the 2025-26 Premier League season begins on August 16. While sporting directors initially supported an earlier closure, stakeholders opted to maintain alignment with other European leagues.
The Premier League adheres to FIFA’s rule that limits the transfer window to a maximum of 16 weeks per year—split into four weeks in January and 12 in the summer. By implementing the early June window, the league remains compliant while accommodating FIFA’s new Club World Cup structure.
FIFA Club World Cup and Commercial Developments
The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will take place in the United States, featuring 32 teams in an expanded format. The tournament’s prize money will be significant, with the winners set to receive $125 million, while the total prize pool stands at $475 million.
Premier League clubs also discussed a potential commercial deal with The Coca-Cola Company, a leading soft drink manufacturer that previously had a sponsorship agreement with the league until 2022. A new partnership could bring further financial benefits to English football.
Upcoming Technological Advancements
Another topic of discussion among Premier League stakeholders was the potential introduction of semi-automated offside technology. The system is currently being tested in FA Cup quarter-final matches. If successful, it may be introduced before the Easter weekend on April 20, although it is unlikely to be implemented in midweek or weekend fixtures before then.
The additional June transfer window represents a significant adjustment to the Premier League’s summer transfer policy.
