Pochettino to Reveal Decision on U.S. Future Next Week

Mauricio Pochettino is set to reveal his long-term plans for his role as head coach of the United States men’s national team (USMNT) next week. This announcement follows the USMNT’s disappointing exit from the 2026 World Cup, where they faced a tough 4-1 defeat against Belgium on July 6, 2026.

Pochettino shared this news during an interview with Cadena Cope on Thursday, July 16, 2026. He mentioned, “Next week we will [make] a decision” regarding his future with the team. His current contract with U.S. Soccer runs through the end of the tournament in December 2026, and reports suggest that U.S. Soccer has offered to extend his tenure as head coach.

Key Details of Pochettino’s Current Situation

This announcement comes amid a lot of speculation about his future. The U.S. Soccer Federation reportedly offered him a contract extension through the 2030 World Cup even before the current tournament kicked off. Still, Pochettino has avoided discussing his future since the team’s elimination, stating he was “unwilling” to dive into that topic right after the defeat.

He underscored the need to evaluate the situation, saying, “We are evaluating it, looking at it.” This approach makes sense, considering the weight of the decision—not just for Pochettino’s career but also for the future of the USMNT. The team is eager to build on its international performance.

Pochettino also addressed rumors about a potential meeting with AC Milan regarding a coaching position. While he denied any personal talks, he did mention that his representatives might have had conversations, emphasizing that he’s “100% committed” to the USMNT during the World Cup.

Context: Pochettino’s Tenure and Its Impacts

Pochettino became head coach of the USMNT in 2024, stepping into a team that was undergoing significant changes. Under his leadership, the squad has shown promising signs, although the recent World Cup exit has cast a shadow over his time in charge.

Fans initially welcomed his appointment, considering his extensive experience in Europe, including successful stints at clubs like Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain.

Even with the disappointing World Cup outcome, many still believe that Pochettino can build a competitive team moving forward. The federation’s willingness to extend his contract reflects their confidence in his ability to guide the USMNT through the next World Cup cycle.

Pochettino’s decision will have impacts beyond just the coaching staff. The USMNT is currently in a crucial phase, aiming to raise its profile on the global stage. A decisive, visionary coach could play a key role in nurturing young talent and creating a cohesive squad that can compete at the highest levels.

What’s Next for Pochettino and the USMNT?

As Pochettino gets ready to make his announcement next week, all eyes will be on the federation’s plans for the future of the national team. If he chooses to stay, expectations will be high as the USMNT looks to regroup for upcoming qualifiers and international friendlies.

On the flip side, if he decides to step away, U.S. Soccer will need to act quickly to find a replacement who can sustain player development and the team’s competitive spirit. This choice will impact not only team dynamics but also the broader strategic direction of U.S. Soccer as it aims to elevate its status in international football.

For now, Pochettino’s focus remains on weighing his options. His commitment to the USMNT during the World Cup is clear, but uncertainty looms as fans and pundits eagerly await his announcement.
