What’s The WONDERfools About?
Set against the backdrop of 1999 — a year buzzing with apocalyptic anxiety as the millennium loomed — The WONDERfools follows four ordinary neighbourhood misfits who suddenly and unexpectedly gain superpowers. Their mission, whether they like it or not, is to protect Haeseong City from villains threatening its very existence.
Leading the group is Eun Chae Ni (Park Eun Bin), a notorious local troublemaker who once publicly declared she wanted to see the end of the world — and who now, with a nose bleed and a look of disbelief, finds herself able to teleport. Her character’s arc is already magnetic: someone who claimed to want destruction now tasked with preventing it.
Lee Un Jeong (Cha Eun Woo) is the composed, in-control member of the team, wielding telekinesis with a calmness that quickly earns him the title of “master” from the rest of the group. Meanwhile, Son Gyeong Hun (Choi Dae Hoon) and Kang Ro Bin (Im Seong Jae) are visibly struggling to adjust to their new abilities — one clutching a car steering wheel mid-chaos, the other with a concrete wall wrapped around his arm like an improvised weapon.
Adding a layer of deeper mystery is the warning that people are disappearing, just as they did 20 years prior. The appearance of the shadowy Dr. Ha Won Do (Son Hyun Joo) and a group called the Wunderkinder suggests there’s a much larger, darker conspiracy at the heart of Haeseong’s troubles.
The teaser closes on a line from Eun Chae Ni that perfectly captures the show’s spirit: “It’s not that I’m nothing, I just haven’t done anything yet.”
Why This Drama Has All Eyes on It
The premise taps brilliantly into the global appetite for superhero fiction — a genre that has dominated screens worldwide — but grounds it in a deeply Korean neighbourhood setting with real warmth and humour. The 1999 time period adds a layer of nostalgic charm that gives the whole story a uniquely retro-comic energy.
Park Eun Bin, fresh off acclaimed performances in Extraordinary Attorney Woo and Castaway Diva, is a near-guarantee of emotional depth even within a high-energy action premise. Cha Eun Woo stepping into a cool, telekinetic role is exactly the kind of casting his fanbase has been hoping for.
