What Is The WONDERfools About?

The WONDERfools is a South Korean Netflix superhero drama written by Kang Eun Kyung (Gyeongseong Creature) and directed by Yoo In Shik (Extraordinary Attorney Woo), starring Park Eun Bin, Cha Eun Woo, Kim Hae Sook, Choi Dae Hoon, and Im Sung Jae. Set in 1999 in Haeseong City, a freak accident gives a young woman and her neighbours superpowers — but their powers are unstable and less than perfect. They join forces with a civil servant to investigate mysterious disappearances across the city, battling villains and their own shortcomings. whats-on-netflix

The Viewership Numbers So Far

The series has amassed 14.6 million views in under three weeks on Netflix. The first week saw a relatively disappointing 2.7 million views and a 6th-place global debut. However, Week 2 saw a massive 196% surge in viewing hours, reaching 7.9 million views and climbing to 2nd in the global rankings. Week 3 saw a 49% dip but still pulled in 4 million more views.

For context, The WONDERfools has already surpassed Gyeongseong Creature Season 1’s three-week view count, sitting only 1.5 million behind both seasons of Bloodhounds — two of the rare K-dramas Netflix has renewed.

The Big Complications

Despite promising numbers, several factors complicate a Season 2 greenlight.

Netflix currently lists The WONDERfools as a “Limited Series” — and in 99% of cases, limited series do not receive a second season. Only rare exceptions like 13 Reasons Why, Beef, and The Perfect Couple have been renewed, and only when backed by exceptional viewership or critical acclaim.

Additionally, the show’s budget — given its number of stunts, visual effects, and star power — is likely to be far higher than the vast majority of K-dramas Netflix produces. whats-on-netflix

Then there’s the cast availability issue. Park Eun Bin is still attached to Extraordinary Attorney Woo Season 2, and Cha Eun Woo is currently serving mandatory military service, which ends on January 27, 2027. He was also embroiled in a tax-evasion allegation earlier this year, though he has since paid the tax owed and apologised.

What the Cast and Director Have Said

Park Eun Bin has hinted that a second season depends on audience reception, saying she hopes many people watch it and that what comes next should be considered depending on how much accumulated affection it receives. Director Yoo In Sik confirmed the story was not made with a multi-season format in mind, but added that the door remains open within the world they created — noting there is a character who holds the key to future events.

Television series renewal decisions typically hinge on a balance of viewership, production cost, and cast availability — and The WONDERfools sits at a complex crossroads of all three.

Our renewal prediction: 50/50. The numbers are moving in the right direction, but the limited series label and logistical hurdles make this genuinely uncertain. The best thing fans can do right now is keep watching and spread the word.
