Pallichattambi Review: Tovino Thomas Is Brilliant — But Even He Can’t Save This Vishu Misfire

There’s a certain kind of Malayalam film that arrives on a festival weekend riding maximum hype, looks incredible on paper, and then quietly deflates by the second half. Pallichattambi, released on Vishu 2026, is exactly that film. Directed by Dijo Jose Antony and starring Tovino Thomas alongside Kayadu Lohar, it had everything going for it — a rich period setting, a capable star, and solid music. And yet, it stumbles in the most fundamental way: the story itself.

Pallichattambi — Overview

Pallichattambi: Story

Set in a fictional Kerala village called Kaaniyar in 1958, the film is rooted in the tension between the newly formed government and the church. The clergymen seek a local protector — a Pallichattambi (essentially a street-smart ruffian) — to stand up against authority. It’s a premise loaded with potential, evoking the spirit of Malayalam cinema’s beloved rural action dramas.

The problem? The script never figures out what to do with it.

What Works?

Tovino Thomas is genuinely terrific here, adding another versatile role to an already impressive filmography. His screen presence and natural charm are the film’s biggest assets. Kayadu Lohar matches him well, and their chemistry brings warmth to the romantic subplot.

Jakes Bejoy’s background score is a highlight throughout, and the action set pieces are easily the film’s technical peak — punchy, visceral, and well-choreographed. The period production design also deserves credit; costumes and props successfully transport you to 1958 Kerala.

A mystery cameo by a prominent Malayalam superstar also generates the film’s most electric moment, stealing every scene with effortless star power.

What Doesn’t Work

This is where it gets frustrating. Despite the strong setup, the screenplay gradually unravels into a tedious, cliché-ridden watch. The dialogues are bland, the subplots drag, and the film loses its grip by the final act. The editing in the climax is noticeably messy, and the cinematography never elevates the drama the way it should.

Dijo Jose Antony, who once delivered the sharp Jana Gana Mana, continues to struggle with consistency. This feels like another case of a talented director unable to translate a good idea into a satisfying film.

Conclusion

Pallichattambi is watchable mostly because Tovino Thomas refuses to let it fully sink. But as a Vishu mass entertainer, it falls well short. Catch it if you’re a die-hard Tovino fan — otherwise, it’s one you can wait to stream.
