The Pogues Fight For A Win In A Messy, Emotionally Satisfying

Outer Banks Season 5 runs a tight 10 episodes. That modest runway carries five years of treasure-hunting chaos plus the gut-punch fallout from the season 4 finale.

Screen Rant published its review on Thursday, August 20, 2026. It frames the closing chapter as action-packed, messy, and ultimately emotionally satisfying. This is the last ride for the Pogues on Netflix, and it demands a delicate clash between closure and the show’s signature absurdity.

The review sets its stakes right in the opening paragraphs: the entire season functions as JJ Maybank’s eulogy. Rudy Pankow’s character died in the season 4 finale, and his presence haunts all 10 episodes of the send-off.

Madison Bailey’s Kiara Carrera suffers most visibly. She alone watched him die, and her grief is inescapable from her very first scene. Her vow to make Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane), JJ’s maniacal biological father, pay becomes the season’s engine.

What Outer Banks Season 5 Understands About Grief

The show’s smartest move is refusing to move past JJ quickly. Kiara’s revenge quest isn’t just plot propulsion; it’s the emotional spine that gives otherwise chaotic twists a reason to exist.

The review notes that JJ, from the very beginning, was the glue holding the group — and arguably the entire show — together. He was a teenage force of pain, friendship, fearlessness, and above all, love. His friends clearly loved him back, and that love drives every major decision through the finale.

That said, the praise is qualified. The review is upfront that the season is messy — the show’s trademark outlandish twists don’t magically become elegant in their farewell. What saves it is coherence of emotion rather than coherence of plot. When the series leans into character truth instead of convenience, it lands its ending.

Where the Messy Final Outing Stumbles

Not every thread earns its payoff. The review acknowledges that years of escalating madness leave some plotlines straining for a landing, with pacing that lurches between high-octane set pieces and quieter mourning.

Could a shorter, tighter season have served the Pogues better? Quite possibly. Does it sink the experience? No. For more detail, see OpenAI Blog.

The tension between wanting closure and honoring the show’s absurd DNA is real. For every emotionally earned beat, there’s a moment that asks audiences to swallow another improbable escape.

But the review’s core assessment holds: the final outing stays worth watching because the character beats land where they matter most, and the balance tilts toward satisfaction.

The Verdict: A Win Earned the Hard Way

This isn’t a pristine farewell, and it doesn’t pretend to be. The Outer Banks season 5 conclusion works because it prioritizes its people over its plot — a gamble that pays off precisely in the moments that count.

So is this a win for the Pogues? Yes, but it’s a scrappy one, fought through grief rather than around it.

For viewers who invested in these characters, the messy, emotionally resonant goodbye delivers exactly the closure the show promised — the group finally gets their win, earned the hard way.
