In what might be the most unexpected GPU news of 2026, Nvidia is reportedly reviving the five-year-old GeForce RTX 3060 — and Samsung is the one building it. Korean business outlet Korea Economic Daily has confirmed that Samsung has restarted its 8nm production line to meet Nvidia orders, bringing an Ampere-generation card back from the dead in the middle of an RTX 50-series era.

This isn’t nostalgia — it’s strategy. The global shortage of GDDR7 memory, required for Nvidia’s current RTX 50-series cards, has created a painful supply squeeze, with RTX 5090 units spotted at retail for over $3,000. The RTX 3060’s reliance on GDDR6 — a far less contested memory standard — makes it a smart workaround.

TSMC’s production capacity is extremely tight, with the chipmaker working hard to narrow the gap between supply and demand for advanced nodes used in both AI chips and consumer GPUs. By tapping Samsung’s idle 8nm capacity instead, Nvidia can keep affordable GPUs on store shelves while focusing newer manufacturing capacity on high-margin AI and data-centre hardware.

The RTX 3060 also has something newer cards don’t right now — availability. Despite being nearly five years old, it recently topped the Steam Hardware Survey as the most-used GPU among gamers, proving there’s still a massive audience for capable 1080p gaming cards. It also supports DLSS 4.5, keeping it relevant in a modern gaming context.

It remains unclear whether Nvidia will favour the original 12GB (192-bit) model or the later 8GB (128-bit) variant — a decision that will significantly impact its appeal to budget GPU buyers. The 12GB version is widely preferred for modern gaming workloads.
