Imagine handing your Aadhaar card to a hotel receptionist and they photocopy it — but can see absolutely nothing personal on it. That’s exactly where India is headed.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is considering a major redesign of Aadhaar cards, potentially removing printed personal details such as name, address, and the 12-digit Aadhaar number — with the new format featuring only the holder’s photograph and a secure QR code.

Old Aadhaar vs New Aadhaar — At a Glance

FeatureOld AadhaarNew Aadhaar
Name printed✅ Yes❌ No
Aadhaar Number✅ Yes❌ No
Address✅ Yes❌ No
Date of Birth✅ Yes❌ No
Photo✅ Yes✅ Yes
QR CodeBasic✅ Encrypted, detailed
Photocopy risk⚠️ High🔒 Near zero

What’s Inside the New QR Code?

All your personal data — name, Aadhaar number, date of birth, address, gender, and biometric verification data — will be stored inside the QR code in encrypted form. The catch? Only authorised apps and government-approved scanners will be able to access the encoded details after proper verification — hotels, event managers, or private offices taking photocopies will get nothing.

UIDAI is also launching a new Aadhaar mobile app to support this, offering QR code-based verification combined with facial recognition for use cases like hotel check-ins, gated community access, event entry, and age verification — similar to how DigiYatra works at airports.

Why Is UIDAI Doing This?

The answer is simple: rampant misuse. UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar stated that the change is aimed at discouraging offline verification practices that remain widespread despite being prohibited under the Aadhaar Act, with several hotels, event organisers, and private institutions continuing to collect and store photocopies — raising serious concerns over data theft and identity fraud.

The redesign specifically targets Aadhaar-related crimes including SIM card fraud, unauthorised loans, and Aadhaar-enabled Payment System (AePS) fraud.

UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar also emphasised “selective credential sharing” as a key feature, allowing residents to share only the necessary identity fields via customised QR codes.

When Does This Happen?

The new Aadhaar card is expected to be rolled out nationwide starting from December 2026, but it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.

This is one of India’s most significant identity security upgrades in years. The new Aadhaar will make your personal data invisible to the naked eye — and that’s a very good thing.
