Nepal Flood Warning: Bhote Koshi Water Level Rises Again, Fresh Alert Issued After Deadly Flash Flood

Nepal is on high alert once more. Authorities issued a fresh warning on Friday after the flow of water mixed with debris and mud increased again in the same stretch of the Bhote Koshi River in Rasuwa, where a major flood struck on August 26.

What’s Happening Right Now

Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) said the renewed rise in water level has raised the risk of another flood in the area, urging rescue workers and residents to move to safer ground.Nepal Police also issued a separate alert after receiving a report of a lake outburst in the Tibetan region, warning that a further surge in water flow upstream cannot be ruled out.

Nepal Flood: Updates

How The Crisis Unfolded

The flash flood originated from a powerful surge of water, sediment, ice, rocks, and debris from the upstream Himalayan catchment in Tibet/China, reportedly triggered by a major ice-and-rock avalanche. The flood rapidly traveled downstream through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems, severely affecting settlements, marketplaces, and travelers around the Rasuwa–Gosaikunda area.

Chinese authorities had informed Nepal that around 2 million cubic metres of water had accumulated in a newly formed barrier lake, with another 3 million cubic metres potentially entering it, raising concerns of a possible breach.

Why The Danger Isn’t Over Yet

Officials noted that the situation at the site where the river was blocked in the Upper Bhote Koshi area has not yet fully returned to normal, meaning risk along the Bhote Koshi, Trishuli, and Narayani river systems cannot be considered to have fully subsided. Continuous monitoring of the river system remains essential as search and rescue operations continue alongside the threat of secondary flooding.

Glacial lake outburst floods like this one are a recognized hazard across the Himalayan region, tied closely to the broader risks of glacial lake outburst flood events driven by melting ice and unstable mountain terrain.
