What Happened

Around 9 AM local time, a sudden surge in the Bhote Koshi River — which originates in Tibet — slammed into the towns of Timure and Syafrubesi in Rasuwa district. Officials suspect the flood may have been caused by a glacial lake outburst or a landslide-triggered blockage upstream, though the exact cause is still being investigated.

The water destroyed a recently built bridge, damaged the Rasuwagadhi customs premises, and washed away vehicles and goods stored at the border crossing — a key trade route between Nepal, Tibet, and China.

Damage Beyond the Death Toll

The flood didn’t just claim lives — it crippled infrastructure. Nepal’s Energy Ministry confirmed that multiple hydropower projects, including the Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Project (111 MW) and Sanjen Khola Hydropower Project (78 MW), sustained significant damage. Police posts in Timure and Syaphrubesi were also destroyed, hampering rescue coordination in the immediate aftermath.

Authorities have deployed drones, sniper dogs, and medical teams, including doctors, to the affected zone, though damaged roads and disrupted communications continue to slow search efforts.

A Recurring Danger Zone

This isn’t the first time the Bhote Koshi corridor has seen deadly flooding. A similar flash flood in July last year killed nine people and left 24 missing, also destroying the Nepal-China Friendship Bridge in the same district.
