When Your First Love Returns With Firm Principles: My Crazy Feminist Girlfriend Lands December 3

What happens when the ex you never forgot walks back into your life, and she’s now fiercely committed to her beliefs? Netflix’s new Japanese romantic drama My Crazy Feminist Girlfriend puts love and principles head to head, and neither side is willing to give in.

My Crazy Feminist Girlfriend: Overview

What’s the Story?

Haruki Kimura (Kido) gets a surprise when his first love returns after seven years. She’s no longer the person he remembers. She’s a committed feminist who won’t bend her convictions, even for romance. Netflix’s synopsis frames it as a clash where neither “love” nor “rights” is up for compromise.

It’s a premise built for sparks, awkward dinners and honest arguments about modern gender dynamics.

From Korean Bestseller to Japanese Screen

The film adapts Min Ji-hyu’s novel of the same name, which became a cultural phenomenon in South Korea for its realistic take on gender dynamics. It has been described as a feminist twist on My Sassy Girl, the classic Korean romance. Keiichi Kobayashi, known for A Girl & Her Guard Dog and Love Is Light, writes and directs.

Meet the Leads

• Mei Nagano plays the lead, identified only as “She.” On Netflix she’s appeared in Burn the House Down and Creator’s File: Gold.
• Taisei Kido plays Haruki. He’s best known on Netflix for First Love, and he’s also appeared in the live-action Windbreaker.

Kido said he was genuinely happy to be cast. After reading the novel, he found its take on male-female value differences interesting and personal. The story is told largely from Haruki’s perspective, so he wanted to explore the character’s struggles and changes carefully.

Why It Could Be a Hit?

Cross-cultural stories are thriving on Netflix, and this one pairs a famous Korean source with a Japanese cast and crew. Rom-com fans get a familiar “ex returns” setup, while the feminist angle gives it a modern edge. At 97 minutes, it’s an easy weekend watch.

Keep your expectations measured, though. There’s no trailer yet, so we can’t judge the tone. It may lean funny, emotional or both.
