Mohun Bagan Sign Samir Zeljković on Two-Year Deal: The Versatile Bosnian Who MBSG Couldn’t Ignore

Salt Lake Stadium is getting a new General. Mohun Bagan Super Giant have officially completed the signing of Bosnian midfielder-defender Samir Zeljković from Punjab FC — and the Mariners believe they’ve found one of the most versatile pieces missing from their puzzle.

From Punjab to the Green and Maroon

Zeljković arrived in India only last season, but wasted absolutely no time making his mark. The 28-year-old became one of Punjab FC’s most reliable performers throughout the ISL 2025-26 campaign — playing predominantly as a deep-lying midfielder, yet equally comfortable slotting in as a centre-back whenever called upon. That rare dual-position ability is precisely what convinced Mohun Bagan’s recruitment team to move quickly.

In the recently concluded ISL season, Zeljković not only scored two goals but also provided three assists — exceptional numbers for a player operating primarily in defensive and holding roles.

Samir Zeljković’s Own Words

Speaking after signing his two-year contract, Zeljković said he was “overwhelmed and thrilled” to represent a club with over a century of rich legacy, adding that he was arriving in Kolkata with the mental preparation to become Champions.

Words that will resonate deeply with the Mohun Bagan faithful.

Mohun Bagan’s Summer Rebuild Gathering Pace

Mohun Bagan’s summer rebuild is showing no signs of slowing down. Just a day before completing the Zeljković deal, the Mariners had already agreed terms with former FC Goa forward Dejan Dražić. The club are also continuing their search for a new head coach, with discussions ongoing with multiple candidates.

Zeljković’s signing addresses a critical structural need — a player who gives the manager tactical flexibility across two key positions. Whether deployed as the shield in front of the back four or slotting seamlessly into defence, the Bosnian brings composure, physicality, and experience of the Indian game from day one.
