Football doesn’t get more dramatic than this. A red card, a penalty conceded, and a two-goal deficit turned into a title-winning comeback — all in the span of one derby.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant have been crowned Calcutta Football League (CFL) 2026 champions, defeating fierce rivals Mohammedan SC 3-2 in a title decider that had everything: an early lead, a red card, a penalty, and a stunning fightback.

How the Title Decider Unfolded

This wasn’t just any league match — it was effectively a final. Both Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan entered their last Championship Round fixture level on four points, each having recorded a win and a draw earlier in the phase. With the title decided purely on accumulated points across three matches, the winner of this direct clash would finish on seven and lift the crown outright.

Mohun Bagan struck first through Sahal Abdul Samad in the 26th minute, only for Mohammedan to level things up right before half-time via Lalremsanga’s 42nd-minute equalizer. The match then took a dramatic turn after the break when Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Dipravat was shown a red card, forcing the Mariners to play the rest of the match a man down.

Mohammedan capitalized almost immediately, converting a penalty through Mahitosh to take a 2-1 lead — putting the ten-man Mariners firmly on the back foot.

The Comeback That Sealed the Title

What followed was a display of sheer resilience. Sahal Abdul Samad struck again in the 70th minute to level the score at 2-2, before Sayan Banerjee completed the turnaround just four minutes later with a 74th-minute strike to make it 3-2. Despite Mohammedan’s push for a late equalizer, Mohun Bagan held firm to secure both the win and the title.

The result also rendered complicated permutations involving East Bengal and Bhawanipore irrelevant, since the winner of this derby was guaranteed the championship regardless of other results.

Why This Win Matters

Beyond the drama, this marks Mohun Bagan’s first CFL title in eight years and their first trophy of the season. The Calcutta Football League itself holds a storied place in Indian football history as one of the oldest football competitions in Asia, part of the broader legacy of football in India that traces back over a century, particularly centered around Kolkata’s fierce club rivalries.

With the CFL crown secured, Mohun Bagan now turns its attention to the IFA Shield, before gearing up for the Indian Super League season, which kicks off on October 10.
