Prabir Das Retirement: Mohun Bagan Legend Hangs Up His Boots After Emotional Battle

Indian football bid farewell to one of its most spirited full-backs today, as Prabir Das announced his retirement from professional football in a heartfelt letter shared on social media. The Prabir Das retirement news comes after a career spanning some of the biggest clubs in the country — and a personal battle far tougher than anything he faced on the pitch.

Prabir Das Retirement: A Journey That Began With a Dream

Das’s story started at the SAIL Academy, where a young boy with nothing but ambition began believing a professional career was possible. That dream carried him through Pailan Arrows, Dempo, FC Goa, and Delhi Dynamos, before eventually bringing him home to Kolkata — the city and club that would define his legacy.

Mohun Bagan: His Footballing Identity

Das was candid about his emotional bond with Mohun Bagan, calling it his mother club and the place where he truly found his identity as a footballer. His career also featured a memorable stint with ATK, where championship glory was matched by adversity — a serious ACL injury he fought back from before later returning to Mohun Bagan SG in the ISL.

His journey continued through Bengaluru FC, Kerala Blasters, Mumbai City, and finally Inter Kashi, each stop adding to a career built on energy, passion, and relentless effort.

The Battle Beyond Football

In a deeply personal revelation, Das shared that during Kerala Blasters’ pre-season in Thailand, he experienced numbness, tingling, and balance issues on the left side of his body — the onset of a severe nerve condition. For the first time in his career, his toughest fight wasn’t for a place on the pitch, but for his health and sense of self.

He credited his partner Geetshree, his family, friends, doctors, and clubs for standing by him through what he called the darkest phase of his life, helping him fight his way back to the game he loved.

Not Goodbye to Football

“Every chapter in football has a final whistle. Today, I take that walk with a heart full of gratitude.” — Prabir Das

While stepping away as a player, Das made clear this isn’t a farewell to the sport itself. He hopes to continue contributing to Indian football in whatever capacity he can, closing his letter simply: “This is Prabir signing off. Thank you for everything.”
