Khalifa: The Ruler OTT Review: Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Gold-Smuggling Actioner

Some films are carried almost entirely by one man’s screen presence. Khalifa: The Ruler is one of them. Now that it’s available to stream, here’s what to expect from Prithviraj Sukumaran’s big, stylish and slightly hollow action thriller before you press play.

Khalifa: The Ruler – Overview

What Is the Story?

Aamir Ali is a simple textile shop owner in Kozhikode whose peaceful life collapses when his father is framed in a major gold-trading scandal. To clear his name and protect his family, Aamir learns that his estranged grandfather was once a feared figure in the gold trade. He steps into those shoes and builds an international empire, which puts him in direct conflict with ruthless rivals. When his family and allies are targeted, he returns from exile to settle the score. The film ends with a revelation hinting at a much larger legacy and sets up a sequel.

What Works?

Prithviraj carries the film with commanding screen presence and effortless swagger. Every entry and elevation moment is designed to excite his fans, and more often than not it lands. The production values are strong too, with opulent visuals, slick action choreography and a pulsating score by Jakes Bejoy.

The first half is the most interesting part, offering a detailed look at how gold smuggling works before building towards the action. The final 15 minutes are another highlight, delivering a high-energy finish. Mohanlal’s extended cameo as the protagonist’s grandfather feels a bit forced into the story, but the veteran star brings grandeur and mass appeal that fans will enjoy.

What Doesn’t Work?

The main issue is that the film often mistakes style for substance. Hero-elevation scenes become repetitive, and the intriguing gold premise gradually gives way to a predictable revenge drama in the second half. The villains lack real menace, so the protagonist is rarely challenged, and the emotional stakes feel thin because relationships mostly exist to move the plot forward. Female characters are largely sidelined, and the review also calls out some truly awful dialogue.

How Are the Performances?

Prithviraj delivers a brooding, stoic intensity that makes the larger-than-life moments feel convincing. Neil Nitin Mukesh looks sharp in his Malayalam debut, though the review notes he’s underwritten and deserves a stronger character. Mohanlal commands the screen despite appearing only late in the film.

Should You Watch It?

If you’re a Prithviraj Sukumaran fan or enjoy mass-action entertainers, it’s a watchable weekend pick. The review’s verdict is that it’s far from perfectly written but works as a routine mass-action entertainer, and it isn’t nearly as bad as some critics suggest. If you want a tight, layered crime story, you may feel it wastes its premise.

Which platform it’s streaming on isn’t stated in the source, so check your preferred OTT app’s listing.

Great swagger, slick visuals and a thrilling last act make Khalifa entertaining, but shallow writing keeps it ordinary. Watch for the star, not for the story.
