K-Pop’s RIAJ Japan Domination Continues: SEVENTEEN, ATEEZ, IVE, and More Rack Up RIAJ Certifications

The Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) has released its latest round of official certifications, and the list reads like a who’s who of the genre’s biggest names right now. From a rare million-seller to a wave of platinum and gold honors, this month’s announcement is a strong signal of just how consistently K-pop acts are moving physical and digital units in Japan.

RIAJ Certifications: K-pop Full Breakdown

Understanding the Certification Tiers

For context, RIAJ’s thresholds work in clear tiers: gold status kicks in at 100,000 units shipped, platinum at 250,000, and the million certification — the rarest of the three — requires a full 1,000,000 units. Hitting any of these benchmarks in Japan, one of the world’s largest physical music markets, is no small achievement given how competitive and saturated the space has become.

The Standout: SEVENTEEN’s Million Milestone

SEVENTEEN’s achievement stands out simply because of how difficult million certifications are to earn. Their 2023 compilation ALWAYS YOURS crossing the one-million mark reflects not just a single hit but sustained, long-term buying power from their Japanese fanbase — the kind of loyalty that keeps older releases moving units years after their original drop.

The Platinum Wave: ATEEZ, IVE, and NCT WISH

Right behind SEVENTEEN, three acts landed platinum certifications. ATEEZ’s Japanese version of “BAD” continues the group’s strong track record in the region, while IVE’s LUCID DREAM and NCT WISH’s YO-I-DON! / BOY MEETS GIRL show that both established and newer groups are finding real commercial traction in Japan.

Gold Certifications: aespa, ILLIT, and NiziU

Rounding things out, aespa’s KISS N TELL, ILLIT’s “I Got Your Back,” and NiziU’s compilation Portfolio all crossed the gold threshold. For ILLIT especially, a relatively newer group, this is a meaningful marker of growing international reach beyond their home market.

Why This Matters for K-Pop’s Global Reach

Japan remains one of the toughest and most valuable music markets in the world, and certifications like these aren’t just vanity metrics — they reflect genuine purchasing behavior in a market where physical album sales still carry serious weight. Seeing six different acts, spanning multiple generations of K-pop, certified in the same announcement underlines just how deep and consistent the genre’s foothold in Japan has become.
