ISL 2024/25 Playoffs: Resilient Jamshedpur FC Stun NorthEast United FC 2-0 to March into ISL Semi-Finals

Jamshedpur FC put on a resilient display to claim a well-earned 2-0 victory over NorthEast United FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong. The win ensures their place in the semi-finals of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024/25, where they will take on League Shield Winners Mohun Bagan Super Giant. Meanwhile, this result marks the end of the road for the Highlanders in the current campaign.

With this triumph, the Red Miners recorded their best-ever away form in ISL history, securing five victories on the road—an achievement that underscores their ability to perform under pressure.

Eze’s Precision Puts Jamshedpur Ahead

The visitors struck first with a signature set-piece routine in the 29th minute. Ashutosh Mehta’s long throw-in found its way to Stephen Eze inside the box. The towering center-back demonstrated remarkable composure, adjusting his feet swiftly before curling a shot from a tight angle into the top left corner. The goal set the tone for Jamshedpur FC’s assertive approach, putting NorthEast United FC on the back foot.

Building on this momentum, young midfielder Mohammed Sanan came close to doubling the lead. The RFYC graduate attempted an ambitious long-range effort eight minutes later, but the shot lacked accuracy and swerved away from the post.

NorthEast United FC’s Fightback Falls Short

The Highlanders showed glimpses of promise in their pursuit of an equalizer. Early in the second half, Buanthanglun Samte delivered a looping long ball from near the halfway mark, forcing Albino Gomes into a crucial save. The goalkeeper’s composure under pressure ensured that Jamshedpur FC maintained their slender advantage.

Moments later, Samte played a more calculated pass to Macarton Nickson, who neatly set up Jithin MS. However, the latter’s strike lacked precision and failed to trouble the opposition goal.

Jamshedpur FC Seals the Victory in Stoppage Time

As the game entered its final stages, the Red Miners sought to capitalize on their lead. In the 83rd minute, Jordan Murray maneuvered past Asheer Akhtar on the right flank before delivering a precise cross to Javi Siverio. However, the attacker was unable to keep his shot on target, letting a golden opportunity slip away.

The contest took an unexpected turn in the 88th minute when Mobashir Rahman received a red card for a reckless challenge, reducing Jamshedpur FC to ten men. Despite the numerical disadvantage, they remained focused and ultimately sealed the win in stoppage time.

Javi Hernandez and Ritwik Das combined masterfully inside the final third, with the Spaniard calmly slotting the ball into the net. This decisive strike not only confirmed Jamshedpur FC’s place in the semi-finals but also highlighted their resilience in clutch moments.

Eze’s All-Round Impact

Beyond scoring the crucial opener, Stephen Eze delivered a commanding defensive performance. The center-back made six interceptions, 11 clearances, and one tackle, ensuring that NorthEast United FC struggled to find breakthroughs.

His contributions on both ends of the pitch were instrumental in securing the victory.

What’s Next?

Jamshedpur FC now shifts focus to their two-legged semi-final clash against Mohun Bagan Super Giant, scheduled for April 3 and April 7. With momentum on their side, the Red Miners will aim to extend their remarkable campaign and push for a spot in the ISL final. Meanwhile, NorthEast United FC bows out of the tournament, reflecting on a season filled with ups and downs.

This win not only cements Jamshedpur FC’s reputation as formidable competitors but also sets the stage for an exciting final stretch of the ISL 2024-25 season.
