Irani Cup 2026-27 to Be Hosted by Jammu & Kashmir for the First Time in 36 Years

Thirty-six years. That’s how long cricket at the highest domestic level has been waiting to return to Jammu & Kashmir in this particular form. On May 20, 2026, the BCCI made it official — and for every cricket lover in the region, it felt like the sport was finally coming home.

The Irani Cup 2026-27 is scheduled from October 1 to 5 across Jammu and Srinagar — and it arrives at the perfect moment. Jammu & Kashmir scripted a historic maiden Ranji Trophy triumph in February 2026, defeating eight-time champions Karnataka by virtue of a commanding 291-run first-innings lead in the final at Hubballi. As Ranji Trophy champions, they earn the right to host the Irani Cup — and this time, that right comes with 36 years of waiting attached to it.

Irani Cup 2026-27 — Key Details

Why This Moment Is So Much Bigger Than Cricket

J&K’s historic maiden Ranji Trophy triumph ended a 67-year wait for the title — a team that overcame enormous challenges to outclass one of domestic cricket’s most decorated sides. To have the Irani Cup — Indian cricket’s most prestigious domestic one-off match — return to their home soil is the BCCI completing a circle that needed closing for three and a half decades.

The Irani Trophy, named in honour of Zal R. Irani — a long-serving BCCI president and treasurer — is contested each season by the reigning Ranji Trophy champions and a Rest of India side composed of the best players from the other state teams. It is the most prestigious curtain-raiser to India’s domestic red-ball season — and now, for the first time in a generation, it goes to Kashmir.

The BCCI’s Biggest Domestic Season Ever

The Irani Cup is just one jewel in an extraordinary crown. The BCCI’s 2026-27 domestic schedule features a staggering 1,788 matches across men’s and women’s cricket — one of the busiest domestic programmes in Indian cricket history.

The season begins with the Duleep Trophy on August 23, followed by the Irani Cup in October, the Ranji Trophy from October 11 to November 5, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy from November 14, the Vijay Hazare Trophy from December 14, and the Ranji Trophy knockouts running through to March 2027.

According to the BCCI’s official website, this season’s domestic calendar also includes expanded women’s cricket programming — reflecting a broader push to develop India’s cricketing depth ahead of major international tournaments.

The Heroes Who Made This Possible

J&K were captained by Paras Dogra throughout their title-winning campaign, with Auqib Nabi — the Player of the Series — taking 60 wickets and Abdul Samad contributing 748 runs with remarkable patience. These are the players who will now wear the champion’s badge when the Rest of India arrive in October — playing in front of their own people, on their own soil, in a match of genuine national significance.

The Irani Cup coming to Jammu & Kashmir isn’t just a fixture being assigned to a venue. It’s a 36-year-old promise being kept — and for a region that has waited so long to be seen, it means everything.
