Sarfaraz Khan to Be Released from India Test Squad for Irani Cup Return

Sarfaraz Khan: In a significant move, Sarfaraz Khan is likely to be released from India’s Test squad for the upcoming second Test against Bangladesh to participate in the prestigious Irani Cup. With the Indian batting lineup solidified and no injury concerns, the BCCI is keen to allow the young batter to get valuable match time in domestic cricket.

Let’s have a look into more details: Sarfaraz Khan

Sarfaraz’s Shift: From India Squad to Irani Cup

Sarfaraz Khan, who was part of India’s squad for the two match Test series against Bangladesh, may not be included in the playing XI for the second Test in Kanpur, set to begin on September 27. Instead, he is expected to head to Lucknow to play for Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai in the Irani Cup, which starts on October 1.

This decision, spearheaded by BCCI Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar, aims to help Sarfaraz maintain his form and gain more experience in red ball cricket. With no apparent need for him in India’s Test squad, sending him to play the Irani Cup provides an excellent opportunity for the young batter to continue honing his skills.

Sarfaraz Khan’s journey with the Indian team has been a promising one, but his spot in the Test side has been competitive. After making his debut earlier this year against England, he performed admirably, scoring three half-centuries in his first five innings. However, with the return of KL Rahul to the Test squad, Sarfaraz has found himself on the sidelines.

Despite Rahul’s underwhelming performance in the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai, where he managed only 38 runs across two innings, the management seems inclined to give him another chance in Kanpur. This decision has paved the way for Sarfaraz to focus on his domestic career, where he can continue proving his worth.

Irani Cup: A Crucial Opportunity

The Irani Cup is set to feature some of the best domestic players, with Ajinkya Rahane leading Mumbai and several top performers, including Shreyas Iyer and Shardul Thakur, joining the squad. Sarfaraz’s inclusion will bolster Mumbai’s batting lineup, and this match will offer him another opportunity to showcase his talent ahead of upcoming national selections.

Mumbai Cricket Association is expected to announce their Irani Cup squad shortly, and it is anticipated that Sarfaraz will be one of their key players. The batter’s performance in this match could further cement his case for a regular spot in India’s Test setup.

Why Sarfaraz’s Release Makes Sense

From a strategic perspective, Sarfaraz’s release benefits both the player and Indian cricket. Instead of warming the bench in Kanpur, Sarfaraz will be able to gain valuable match practice in a high stakes domestic tournament. Given that Kanpur and Lucknow are in close proximity, Sarfaraz can easily rejoin the Test squad if any last minute injury or fitness concerns arise.

The BCCI’s focus on ensuring Sarfaraz stays match ready highlights their long-term investment in his development. As a specialist middle order batter, he remains a crucial part of India’s future Test plans. His stint in the Irani Cup will only help him sharpen his skills and remain in peak form.
