IPL Governing Council Chairperson Arun Dhumal confirmed that the BCCI is monitoring the situation and will make necessary calls, adding: “We are reviewing the development. Since this is an evolving situation, nothing can be said as of now. But given the requirement of the situation, we will take a call accordingly.”

Players Stranded — and the Airspace Problem Isn’t Going Away

The human cost of the West Asia crisis is already visible. Players and support staff of South Africa and West Indies, knocked out of the T20 World Cup on March 4 and 1 respectively, remain stuck in India. The England cricket team, eliminated on March 5, were lucky enough to leave just two days later.

As the IPL approaches, the travel problem threatens to get worse. Considering there are no direct flights to India from the Caribbean and Africa, one typically needs connecting flights through Dubai — the primary hub. But temporary airspace restrictions have been placed in UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain.

The airspace has been partially reopened with limited departures from Dubai International Airport (DXB), Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International (DWC), and Zayed International Airport (AUH). But one major incident, and it will all be closed once again. The concern isn’t just delay — it’s that some overseas players may simply choose not to risk the journey to India at all for IPL 2026.

This is an alarming prospect for franchises that have invested hundreds of crores in foreign talent at the IPL 2026 mega auction. Imagine a team missing a marquee overseas signing on opening night because their flight couldn’t route through Dubai.
