For the first time, someone other than Matt Reeves is directing Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight. The reason behind it is more human than dramatic.

Reeves has guided this Gotham since 2017, when he first came aboard to direct. After the film arrived in March 2022, the sequel began shooting in June 2026. Then, on 5 October, Warner Bros. announced production in London was temporarily paused so Reeves could focus on a family matter. DC Studios said he had its full support.

Now filming has resumed, and Steven Soderbergh is in the director’s chair to finish the shoot. Press coverage calls it the end of an era, since it’s the first time anyone else has directed Pattinson’s Batman.

The Batman Part II

Reeves Is Not Leaving

This is the part fans most need to hear. Reeves made it clear he is not leaving the sequel. He thanked Soderbergh for helping him finish principal photography during a challenging time. DC Studios co-head James Gunn has also confirmed that Reeves remains the film’s director.

According to DC Studios, Soderbergh personally offered to complete the shoot as an admirer of Reeves’ work. His stated goal is to generate footage that blends with what’s already filmed, so Reeves can properly finish his film.

What Robert Pattinson Said

Pattinson called Soderbergh’s help generous and selfless, and said he’s doing it in a warm way. He also gave a hint about timing: the shoot is nearly done. He said Reeves had poured so much work into the script that they’re almost finished, and Soderbergh just wants to help get the film to the edit.

That’s reassuring. It suggests the film isn’t in trouble. It just needed a helping hand.

Why Soderbergh Is a Smart Choice

Soderbergh is an Oscar-winning filmmaker known for Traffic, Erin Brockovich and the Ocean’s trilogy. His approach is to support Reeves’ vision rather than replace it. With the film so close to wrapping, that matters. A seamless handover keeps the tone of The Batman intact.

Reeves Still Has Plenty on His Plate

Even away from the set, Reeves stays busy in Gotham:

  • He produced the DCU horror film Clayface, which opened to strong numbers.
  • A third film is planned to close out his Batman trilogy.
  • He and 6th & Idaho will produce the animated film Dynamic Duo.
  • He is a producer on the animated series Batman: Caped Crusader.
