After eight weeks of fan theories, HBO’s Lanterns has wrapped, and showrunner Chris Mundy has now cleared up its biggest twist. Here’s what happened, and what it could mean next.
What Happened in the Finale Lanterns S1?
The finale leaves Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan dead and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart wearing a ring of his own. John gets there by accepting his fear, speaking a brand-new oath written for him, taking a dead ring from Hal’s body and charging it with a power battery Sinestro forged.

The Twist, Explained
Fans suspected the battery carried fear, and Mundy confirmed it. The fear wasn’t planned, though. Traces came from the contaminated water on Antaan’s homeworld, which seeped into the battery. DC Studios had already labeled the result the Dark Lantern.
Mundy says the idea grew from the show’s central theme: real courage means facing fear instead of pretending it isn’t there. He described the Dark Lantern as a physical version of that message, which the series touched on several times during the season. This concept hasn’t appeared in DC Comics before.
Not Quite Green, Not Quite Yellow
Co-creator Tom King added that John isn’t fully a Green Lantern anymore, since his lantern carries some fear. That makes him a blend of green and yellow. The lantern still looks mostly green, though, so expect that question to hang around until Season 2.
What This Means for Sinestro and Yellow Lanterns?
Mundy’s answer weakens the theory that Sinestro planned to turn John into an early Yellow Lantern. Still, it’s possible Sinestro is working toward bringing Hal back as one. Sinestro had little screen time in Season 1, so he could easily step up as a main villain next season.
Conclusion
I like that the twist grows from theme rather than shock value. It makes John’s power feel earned, but it also leaves a risk: fear-based power tends to corrupt over time. If DC follows that path, John may eventually give up the Dark Lantern and become the classic Green Lantern Corps member from the comics.
