Pakistan’s Military & Paramilitary to Oversee Security Operations

As per reports, the Pakistan government has approved the deployment of the Pakistan Army and Rangers under Article 245 of the Constitution and the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997. The decision was made by the federal cabinet to ensure the safety of players, officials, and spectators amid heightened security concerns.

Key Security Details:

• Over 12,664 security officers will be stationed across Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi, where the matches will be held.
• 7,618 officers will be deployed in Lahore, 4,535 officers in Rawalpindi, and 411 officers from the Special Branch will provide operational security.
• The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, who also serves as the federal interior minister, is personally overseeing security arrangements.
• Special attention is being given to team hotels, stadiums, and transportation routes.

Why Such a High-Level Security Plan?

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is a significant moment for Pakistan cricket, as it brings a global tournament back to the country after a long hiatus. The security plan aims to:
✅ Ensure smooth execution of the event without any threats.
✅ Facilitate safe entry and movement for spectators at venues.
✅ Address international concerns about hosting the event in Pakistan.

However, India has opted out of playing matches in Pakistan, citing security concerns. Instead, all of India’s matches will be held in Dubai.

PCB Under Fire for Last-Minute Preparations

While security measures are being bolstered, PCB has faced criticism for its delayed preparations. The renovation of key stadiums in Lahore and Karachi was incomplete until the last minute. However, Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore was finally unveiled in a grand opening ceremony, followed by a Pakistan vs. New Zealand match.

Will Security Plans Reassure Cricket Fans?

The deployment of military and paramilitary forces reflects the seriousness with which Pakistan is approaching the ICC Champions Trophy. With three-layered security measures in place, the country aims to ensure that the tournament progresses smoothly and reaffirms Pakistan’s ability to host global cricketing events.
