“I Didn’t Think She Could Fight”: Priyadarshan on Being Proven Wrong by Daughter Kalyani in Lokah

Sometimes even the most experienced filmmakers get proven wrong by their own family. Director Priyadarshan has opened up about how his daughter Kalyani Priyadarshan shattered his expectations with her action-heavy role in the pan-Indian hit Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra.

What Priyadarshan Said?

Speaking to News18, Priyadarshan recalled being skeptical when Kalyani first told him she’d be performing fight sequences in the film. Without having read the full script, he struggled to grasp the concept and doubted whether his daughter could genuinely pull off action choreography. In his own words: “She just told me that she’s going to fight in the film. I didn’t think that she could fight!”

That skepticism didn’t survive the film’s first cut, though. After watching it, Priyadarshan openly admitted his initial judgment was wrong and expressed genuine admiration for what Kalyani brought to the screen.

A Father Who Stepped Back

Interestingly, this admission also revealed something deeper about their professional relationship. Following the experience, Priyadarshan decided to stop weighing in on Kalyani’s film choices altogether. He’s previously maintained a clear boundary about never directing her in a feature film, preferring to relate to her as her father rather than as a director working with an actor — though he did make a rare exception for a non-film project recently.

Why This Story Resonates

Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra turned into a major pan-Indian success, positioning Kalyani as one of the industry’s most talked-about rising actresses. For a veteran like Priyadarshan — known for decades of work across Malayalam cinema and beyond — publicly admitting he underestimated his own daughter’s range speaks to how genuinely surprising her transformation into an action lead must have been.

What’s Next for Both

Kalyani is now stepping into Hindi cinema with Pralay, co-starring Ranveer Singh, marking a major expansion of her career beyond Malayalam films. Meanwhile, Priyadarshan is preparing for the release of Haiwaan, a crime thriller starring Saif Ali Khan and Akshay Kumar, arriving in theaters on September 11.
