Krishnaraj, the Weaver Whose Voice Made Tamil Cinema Dance, Is No More

Tamil cinema is mourning two musical giants in a single week. Veteran playback singer Krishnaraj Ramasamy passed away in Chennai on October 22, 2026, at 75, just five days after composer Deva, his long-time collaborator and mentor.

What Happened with Krishnaraj?

Krishnaraj died at a private hospital in Chennai. According to reports, he had been dealing with health issues, though the cause hasn’t been confirmed. His mortal remains were taken to his hometown, Vembadithalam in Salem district, for the final rites.

Tributes poured in from across the industry, including Vijay, Sarathkumar, and singers Sujatha Mohan and Anuradha Sriram.

Krishnaraj : Overview

From Handloom to Heartstrings

Before the studio lights, Krishnaraj worked at a handloom. He sang at village temple festivals and with local light-music troupes, then moved to Chennai chasing his dream. It’s the kind of journey that reminds us how big talent can grow in small towns.

A Partnership That Defined an Era

Deva recorded Krishnaraj’s first film song for Adhikaalai Subavelai, which reportedly never reached theatres. Their bond lasted through the 1990s and 2000s, with songs in films like Nenjinile, Lovely, Jai Surya and Gokulathil Seethai.

His folk-flavoured hit from Kadhal Kottai made him a household voice, and Thanjavooru Mannu Eduthu earned him state recognition. Fans of Deva will remember how well the two voices and tunes suited each other.
