A Shot-for-Shot Remake of the Animated Classic

The live-action How to Train Your Dragon is an ambitious project, closely following the plot and structure of the original DreamWorks Animation film. Set in a Viking village, the story follows Hiccup, a young boy who embarks on a quest to slay dragons but ends up forming an unlikely bond with one of these fierce creatures, Toothless.

The teaser trailer reveals the first glimpses of the action, with young Hiccup (played by Mason Thames) grappling with his destiny. In a poignant moment, Hiccup turns to his father, Stoick the Vast, voiced by Gerard Butler, and says, “Dad, I can’t kill dragons.” Stoick, however, remains resolute, replying, “But you will.” This exchange sets the tone for a tale of conflict, growth, and the eventual bond that will change both their worlds.

The Cast: Bringing the Characters to Life

The casting choices for the live-action adaptation have been carefully selected to honor the essence of the original animated characters while introducing new faces to the iconic roles. Mason Thames, known for his performance in The Black Phone (2022), will portray the young Viking Hiccup. The cast also includes a star-studded lineup of actors, such as Gerard Butler, who reprises his role as Stoick the Vast. Other notable cast members include Nick Frost, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, Ruth Codd, Peter Serafinowicz, and Murray McArthur. The Vision of Dean DeBlois: A Return to Familiar Ground

Dean DeBlois, who co-directed the original animated How to Train Your Dragon alongside Chris Sanders, returns as both the writer and director of this live-action version. His involvement ensures that the new adaptation will stay true to the heart of the franchise while offering fresh visuals and an updated narrative approach.

DeBlois has been deeply involved with the franchise since its beginning, overseeing both the original film and its sequels. His understanding of the characters and world makes him the perfect choice to bring the beloved tale to life in a live-action format, capturing both the magic and the emotional depth of Hiccup and Toothless’s bond.
