The ever-expanding underworld of assassins is getting a massive new addition. Rising Hollywood star Mason Thames has officially been cast in the highly anticipated John Wick spin-off film, CAINE. The upcoming action-packed feature, produced by Lionsgate, will center on the fan-favorite blind assassin introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4. With martial arts legend Donnie Yen returning to reprise the titular role and make his English-language directorial debut, the addition of Thames adds another exciting layer to a star-studded cast. As production gets underway, fans are eager to see how Thames will fit into the dangerous and highly stylized universe of the High Table.

The Rise of Mason Thames

Mason Thames is rapidly becoming one of Hollywood’s most sought-after young actors. He first captured global attention with his breakout performance in the critically acclaimed horror hit The Black Phone, starring alongside Ethan Hawke. His ability to anchor intense, emotionally charged narratives quickly made him a standout talent.

Following his success in the horror genre, Thames landed the lead role of Hiccup in the massive live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon. Now, by stepping into the bloody, neon-lit world of John Wick, Thames is further proving his versatility. While his exact role in CAINE is currently being kept tightly under wraps, fans are heavily speculating whether he will play a young protégé, a new target, or a member of a rival assassin faction.

What is the Plot of CAINE?

The plot of CAINE promises to dive deep into the emotional and action-heavy mythology of the John Wick universe. The story picks up shortly after the explosive events of John Wick: Chapter 4. In that film, Caine was a reluctant antagonist—an old friend of John Wick who was forced out of retirement by the High Table to hunt down Wick in exchange for the safety of his daughter.

By the end of the fourth chapter, Caine is finally freed from his deadly obligations to the High Table. However, freedom in this universe is rarely permanent or peaceful. The spin-off will follow Caine on a standalone adventure, blending Yen’s signature precision choreography with deep emotional storytelling. But danger is already lurking, as the post-credits scene of the fourth film revealed Akira—seeking revenge for the death of her father at Caine’s hands—stalking him in Paris.

An All-Star Cast and Elite Production Team

Mason Thames is joining an incredibly robust ensemble. Aside from Donnie Yen, the film features Rina Sawayama, who is officially returning to reprise her role as the lethal bow-wielding assassin, Akira.

The cast also includes Stranger Things breakout star Dacre Montgomery and veteran actor Bill Nighy, both stepping into undisclosed roles. Behind the camera, the film boasts serious franchise pedigree. Keanu Reeves and John Wick director Chad Stahelski are producing the project, ensuring the aesthetic and kinetic action stay true to the original films. The screenplay has been penned by Mattson Tomlin, known for his work on The Batman Part II, alongside Michael McGrale.

The Expanding World of John Wick

Lionsgate’s commitment to building out the John Wick universe has never been stronger. What started as a revenge story about a man and his dog in 2014 has evolved into a multi-media global phenomenon.

CAINE is a vital piece of this cinematic expansion. It follows the trajectory of the prequel television series The Continental and the Ana de Armas-led feature film Ballerina, which bridges the gap between the third and fourth mainline movies. By placing Donnie Yen at the helm of his own spin-off, the franchise is heavily leaning into its martial arts inspirations, moving away from gun-fu to embrace the style of classic Hong Kong action cinema.
