How Marvel Quietly Swapped Loki For A New Version Before Avengers: Doomsday

Here’s a twist even hardcore Marvel fans sometimes miss: the Loki returning in Avengers: Doomsday isn’t the same Loki who invaded New York in 2012. Tom Hiddleston is back, but Marvel Studios has officially replaced the character with an alternate timeline version — and the MCU has been building toward this since Avengers: Endgame.

From New York Invader To God Of Stories?

The original Loki died in Avengers: Infinity War, killed by Thanos. But during the time heist in Avengers: Endgame, a 2012 variant of Loki escaped with the Tesseract, creating a new timeline branch. That escaped variant became the Loki fans followed across two seasons of Disney+’s Loki — and he’s the one appearing in Avengers: Doomsday.

Why This Matters For Avengers: Doomsday

By the end of Loki Season 2, this variant sacrificed himself to hold the multiverse’s timelines together, replacing Kang variant He Who Remains at the End of Time. That sets him up as the multiverse’s protector — a role that puts him directly at odds with Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.

Reports suggest Loki will appear outside Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter’s home to warn them of Doom’s coming threat, hinting that Steve’s own timeline choices may have triggered the incursion that shaped Doom’s villain arc. Fans are also hoping this finally delivers a long-awaited Thor and Loki reunion, since this Thor has no idea a version of his brother is still alive.
