Hillman College Reopens: Netflix’s ‘A Different World’ Sequel Gets a September Date

Class is back in session at Hillman. Netflix has confirmed that its A Different World sequel series premieres September 24, 2026, following Deborah Wayne — daughter of original leads Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert — as she starts freshman year at her parents’ HBCU alma mater, trying to build her own identity out of their long shadow.

What’s the New Series About?

Maleah Joi Moon stars as Deborah, described as free-spirited and a little rebellious — a fresh spin on Hillman life for a new generation. Original director Debbie Allen returns as executive producer and helms the premiere, ensuring the reboot stays rooted in the show’s DNA rather than feeling like a cash-grab reboot.

A Different World Overview

Original Cast Returns for a Reunion

Four beloved faces from the ’80s/’90s original are back: Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy reprise Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, joined by Darryl M. Bell and Cree Summer. Guy has said stepping back into Whitley felt instant, “like we had never left.” That kind of chemistry is exactly what fans hoping for authentic nostalgia want to see.

Executive producers Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood — who met while writing on the original show — are also back, alongside showrunner Felicia Pride, calling it a chance to “reimagine A Different World for beloved fans and new generations alike.”
