It’s the End of an Era — HiAnime, the World’s Biggest Anime Piracy Site, Has Officially Shut Down

If you’ve ever opened HiAnime to catch the latest episode of Jujutsu Kaisen or One Piece, you already know the sinking feeling that came with logging on today. One of the most visited anime streaming sites in the world has gone dark — and the goodbye message it left behind is almost poetic in how final it sounds.

HiAnime Shutdown — Key Facts

What Happened to HiAnime?

HiAnime has been widely regarded as the most popular anime piracy site with the largest library at the moment by anime fans. Out of the blue, the HiAnime website has been shut down. It is currently unknown whether the site was taken down after the U.S. Government and production studios issued a DMCA notice.

The timing is notable — just weeks after HiAnime appeared on the U.S. Government’s anti-piracy watchlist, the site went silent. Users visiting the URL were greeted with a short, final farewell from the team — a surprisingly warm message for a site that had always operated in the shadows.

This follows a broader crackdown on anime piracy globally. Last year, over 700 manga series were wiped after a DMCA notice hit a popular manga piracy platform, and now the largest anime streaming piracy site has followed suit.

Could HiAnime Come Back?

A new comment from a HiAnime server mod has been circulating online that hints at the website coming back: “Greetings, everyone. There appears to be an issue with the website at this time. Kindly refrain from panicking or disseminating unofficial or unverified information. We will provide updates regarding the situation in due course.”

Whether this means a technical issue or a planned return under a different domain — nobody knows yet. But fans have seen this script before with piracy sites, and a full permanent shutdown is typically confirmed through silence, not community posts.

Why Do People Use Piracy Sites Like HiAnime?

The answer is uncomfortable but honest. Anime streaming services have been getting better over the years, but the problem of availability of titles varying based on regions is silently pushing people towards piracy. Crunchyroll, Netflix, and Prime Video cover a lot — but not everything, not everywhere, and not always affordably.
