GTA VI Release Date Delayed to May 2026 as Rockstar Prioritizes Quality

GTA VI Release Date: Rockstar Games has finally announced that Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) is delayed until May 26, 2026, which is well after the intended September 2025 launch. The additional time is necessary for “putting a higher polish on the game,” and matching the high expectations people have for the title. Fan anticipation for the next slump was no doubt rained on, but Rockstar made it clear that the delay is for the best and will ensure that the game will be a polished and well-shaped ending product.

Rockstar Delays GTA VI Release to May 2026, Citing Need for More Time to Meet High Player Expectations

In a statement shared on May 2, Rockstar talked directly to their fans to thank them for their interest and for being patient about the delay. The note stressed that the studio is working to deliver something that will exceed players’ expectations, and that additional time in development is required to do so. Rockstar also stated that it would share more news about the game soon.

Fan outrage is understandable, but the decision is entirely in line with Rockstar’s commitment to quality over release dates. The game’s debut trailer, which was released in December 2023, was generating millions of views within hours and stoking massive anticipation. Not much is known so far, but it has been said that GTA VI will be set in a modern-day version of Vice City and will feature the first ever female protagonist of the series by the name of Lucia.

The delay also has financial implications. Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, saw its shares fall as much as 16% after the announcement. Some investors fear that the delayed launch will hurt near-term profits, and that’s a big deal in the case of GTA, which is Take-Two’s most profitable franchise. But the company told investors it still anticipated strong financial results for fiscal years 2026 and 2027 on the line-up of new projects coming down the pike.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick stood by Rockstar’s decision, emphasizing that delivering a top-tier gaming experience takes priority. He acknowledged the delay’s impact but affirmed the company’s long-term vision of prioritizing excellence.
